Another break-in question

The proper way to break in an engine is to run it at about 3/4 throttle up to about 2/3 of redline and then let off the throttle and let it engine brake. This forces the rings against the cylinder walls to make them conform to the shape of the cylinder and engine braking helps draw any chips out of the ring lands.

Obviously doing this on an automatic transmission is hard. The truth of the matter is most engines from the factory are pretty well broken in from the factory so just driving it normally is usually sufficient.

Break in techniques (pertaining to rings) have become a non issue ever since OEMs discovered moly coated rings and CNC cylinder hones that leave a proper plateau/crosshatch. Engines are run plenty at the factory, and at the dealership before a customer even touches the car.

That being said, chrome rings and stainless steel rings still need proper break in.
 
I willing to bet no one including car makers has actual data on what happens under certain break in techniques over the long term.
