An abandoned rail station and main line

That place was abandoned for as long as I ever knew. It was a bleachery back around 1904, per a map we have.

I found some images of the bridge that used to end at the dirt pile that I had photographed. That track from the original pictures deadheaded at the Passaic River, but this bridge took the old Erie main line over the river and through Passaic/Patterson NJ on the way to Suffern, NY and then onward. I found these in the archives on the E-L mailing list. Great stuff!

Here is the Erie mainline going through the center of Passaic. My Great Grandmother told of railroad tracks going through the center of Passaic, but all I ever knew was a parking area down the middle (decorated with boxes on their pointy end as I recall when young, they may have been removed).

All these photos above in this post are posted by Christopher Vitz, and I believe they were done by Henry Vitz.

Another Passaic image, as most of the buildings are still there:

Apparently there were some pretty sharp turns after the bridge to get into Passaic, this looks like one of them:

Here is an image showing a sharp curve coming off:

All of those were from "Dom".

Good stuff over on the railfan E-L list.

AWESOME pictures!!Thank you very much for posting!!I think I see my moms 57 Bel Air and 63 Impala in some of the aerial shots..She spent a lot of time riding around the Passaic/Paterson area..Seeing all that brings back a ton of memories.

Never heard of railfan E-L list..Thanks for mentioning that.

I love abandoned places - lot's of nice websites on this sort of thing.

It is amazing how fast mother nature reclaims her land.
