Amsoil vs HPL; cost difference worth it?

I used Royal Purple in our 2002 Honda Accord we owned from new until we let it go in 2020. The car was garage kept and like new in and out with not one engine repair. I got onto Royal Purple after the engineers where I worked changed all of our lubrication of equipment to Royal Purple with the exception of our Cummins Diesel engines which used Valvoline. I felt good about Royal Purple until the company was bought out by some other company. Word got out almost immediately the new owner was prepared to mess with the formula. I heard he was simply a rich buyer with absolutely zero knowledge or experience about what he planned to do with Royal Purple products. Have not purchased any Royal Purple since.
Royal Purple is owned by Calumet, Inc. which, is a publicly traded company.

Not sure if RP is the same quality or not today after the company was sold by its inventor. I did look into the history and see what you say.

It appears it was ONLY sold the one time to Calumet. The sales to another company I read about must have fallen thru. Maybe it was not changed with the sales because from what I see Calumet is a long established , respected company in the industry. I'm sure I likely read that negative stuff about changes in all those internet Royal Purple "hate sessions" that has been going on for years.

I've used the HPS version many many times. Never an issue with the vehicle or the lawn tractor that it was used in.

Great to know. It is a true shame how there was so much anti-to flat out hate about Royal Purple across the web at one time.
I never did really look back into the BITOG archives to see exactly how much of that was going on here. I would guess a lot.
Not sure if it is still as hated today? Likely is because I do not recall much talk about it good or bad here since I joined up.

I know I was not happy at all at the time I heard about that pending sale & changes that apparently did not go thru. It appears another outfit bought the company. Maybe todays RP is still pretty much the same as it started out? No idea now.
I had been very satisfied with using RP for the life of one of our longest kept vehicles. A total of eighteen years.

Royal Purple Oil and the Calumet Sale

Royal Purple oil was not changed as a result of Calumet’s sale to Lubrication Engineers, Inc. The transaction did not alter the product itself — it was a sale of the industrial portion of the Royal Purple® business, not a change in the oil formulation or brand.

What was sold:

  • The high‑performance synthetic industrial product line, including industrial gear lubricants, bio‑environmental lubricants, stationary natural gas engine oils, hydraulic lubricants, and compressor oils.
  • An exclusive license for the Royal Purple® brand in industrial applications Calumet+1.
What was retained:

  • The consumer portion of Royal Purple® — the automotive‑focused brands such as High Performance Motor Oil, HPS®, HMX®, Max EZ®, Max Gear®, Max‑Clean®, XPR®, and Duralec Super™ — continued to be produced and sold through Calumet’s existing retail and auto parts channels Calumet+1.
  • The Porter, Texas manufacturing site remained under Calumet’s ownership Calumet+1.
Impact on oil products:

  • The sale did not change the chemical composition or performance of Royal Purple motor oils.
  • The consumer‑market oils (e.g., HPS®, Max EZ®, Max Gear®) remain the same products, just now produced and distributed under Calumet’s continued operations.
  • The industrial‑market oils (e.g., gear, hydraulic, compressor oils) were transferred to Lubrication Engineers, Inc., but these are separate from the consumer motor oils.
Bottom line:
If you are using Royal Purple motor oil for your car or truck, there is no change in the product — the sale only affected the industrial‑market segment and the company that owns it. Your existing oils remain the same, and Calumet continues to produce and sell the consumer‑market Royal Purple® products.

Have you priced out AMSOIL Signature Series with a gallon case of 4? It's much cheaper than that. Around $10/quart and a little change or so from what I can remember.

Frankly I'd stick with AMSOIL. I think their history and testing is unmatched. If you don't think so, watch the Banks Power video series from his visit to the AMSOIL headquarters. (If you want to stay boutique. Good argument for all the high quality oils OTS at Walmart.) Rudnick isn't at HPL any more. I don't know if they'll lose touch with time without him as the formulas drift and change, but I trust AMSOIL to make a quality product forever.
Banks is a great salesman and even better trash talker of his competitors.

List of WalMart oils I'd readily choose before Royal Purple:
- Valvoline Restore and Protect
- Valvoline Advanced
- Valvoline Extended Protection (and Valvoline Extended Protection High Mileage)
- Mobil 1 ESP (any variety)
- Mobil 1 Euro FS
- Mobil 1 Truck and SUV
- Mobil 1 Extended Performance
- Castrol Edge Euro (most viscosities). Heck, the 5w-30 is A3/B4 and MB229.5 and is quite high SAPS as an API SL oil! It's arguably the highest SAPS 5w-30 on the Walmart shelf.
Using one of your top three in our new vehicle right now with no hesitation. You put a very good list together off the shelf I think.
