Exxon:

The 4-ball wear test is a test designed to evaluate the performance of a gear oil. The 4-ball wear test is not included as a part of any industry-wide recognized engine oil specifications (e.g. ILSAC GF-4, API SM, or ACEA specifications). ExxonMobil does not regard this test as a useful indicator of engine oil performance.


I wonder :) If amsoil spents as much money as exxon on testing .. ?:)

Does Mobil 1 have less oil film strength than Royal Purple? I have seen many times the friction test of oils using the machine that test the oil film, test result shows that Royal Purple has more friction protection that Mobil 1 does, seeing these results makes me think that Mobil 1 is lacking some benefits, therefore Royal Purple has the better protection of all.

Answer:
There are certain oils in the market today that use EP (extreme pressure) additives in their engine oil that are really designed for gear oils and not engine oils. Extreme pressure additives are typically not used in engine oils for a number of reasons but the most important is because they can cause engine corrosion over time. The rigs being used in these demonstrations are primarily designed for industrial applications like gear oils where extreme pressure is an important performance feature you need. These demonstration rigs have very little to do with modern engines and that is the reason that market leading oils in the industry perform poorly in these tests.

Please note that the ANSWER does not single out any particular brand, simply a testing methodology.
 
Of course Amsoil doesn't spend as much money as all of Exxon-Mobil. But Amsoil is a tiny company compared to EM. That doesn't automatically make EM lubricants better. Now as a percentage of revenue or sales, I have no idea.

The 4-ball test is just an extra test. One of many tests. Indeed it is used for a variety of lubricating fluids, and frankly the topic has been beat to death here.

Indeed it has Pablo. A quick search shows that.

Yeah I think I agree completely with that statement.
 
Because an engine has more than plain bearings in it. Many have chains, gears, cams and ball and sockets. All sorts of stuff that need oil other than a plain bearing.

XOM claims extreme pressure additives in engine oil can cause corrosion over time. Does anyone know anything about this? See there most resent Q/A on there web site regarding this.
 
In my opinion, run Amsoil Oil like the other oils and You may find that Amsoil may be like all of the other oils...no special equipment installation, just run Amsoil Oil like you would any other oil through the filter of your choice then run the tests like UOA or whatever.....Amsoil may work as well as any other oil.......In my opinion...
