Ok I drained the factory gear oil in my manual transmission at 2000 miles. What I didnt do is check the rating of the oil until after I put new in. It calls for a gl-4 rating and I put in Amsoil Sever Gear gl-5 rated. Should I redrain and put gl-4 in or do you think it should be ok for 30-40k miles. Any help would be greatly appriciated. I heard gl-5 oil after digging in can be bad for syncronizers.

Is this the AWD transaxle, or 2WD? If they share fluid with the front differential and the gearbox, then you're probably okay IMO. We always get on this debate with the Subarus because of the same issue...save the gears with GL-4, or save the differential with GL-5....comes down to drain intervals and shift feel.

FWIW, I have GL-5 Severe Gear in my gearbox/diff right now in the Subaru.

But if you are under warranty, you may want to drain it. Maybe save it in a very clean container, and use it later....or put it in the rear diff (which should be GL-5).

It specs GL-4 for the transmission and GL-5 for the front diff. It has an actual transmisson & transfercase. I really dont want to drain it out but I just might. I currently have about 5000 miles on this diff oil. Shift quality is good the only time it feels slightly stiff is when its around 15deg F and below. Soon as I go a few miles down the road its great again.

It's your car. Do what you feel the most comfortable with. If it were mine, I would drain it ASAP and put in factory approved spec synthetic in. With the wrong fluid in the case, you are probably affecting long term reliability of this component.
