AMSOIL Signature Series ATF Shift feel

I pulled about 6,000 lbs today with it and it felt fine. I was on soft gravel roads and I felt some good solid shifts when I was deep in the throttle pulling away from a stop.

Trans temp got up to a whopping 150

bit it was in the mid thirties and I was going 40 ish on the soft roads to the dump.

On the way home with the empty trailer (2800 lbs) it felt good as well. Set the cruise at 65 and didn't think twice about it. Trans temp at that speed was just above 125.

I'm sure it will be good.

...It's been 700-800 miles already since I had it done. It did take some time to feel a distinct difference from the old fluid, but gradually it settled in to its current state...

...Just to be clear, the fluid was changed about 60k miles ago but there were some signs that the fluid was getting worn out...

Which fluid was changed at what mileage?

It does take some time for the fluid to thoroughly ingress into the semi-porous clutch material and affect the dynamic friction coefficient.

Sorry, after rereading I actually made it worse, not better.

I had The trans flushed at about 109k, shortly after purchase. It looked like the original fluid at that time. Mechanic used his house synthetic fluid, which I'm presuming to be BG.

Fast-forward 3 years and 60k miles, I had it flushed again with the AMSOIL Signature Series.

I now have about 1,000 miles on the Amsoil ATF.

Good deal. I would take it out to at least 4,000 miles or more before considering changing fluid.

This should have read:

In addition, the new fluid will be dispersing crud.

+1 did you add any filtration (magnafine, etc.) to to cooler line when upgrading the cooler?

It may be a non issue if that transmission has a real filter in the pan, as opposed to a rock catcher screen.

I did not. The factory filter on these is the Filtran type, which is supposedly a 50-80 micron filter. Better than a rock catcher, but clearly not as good as an external. And, no, I did not change the filter. They are actually a lifetime filter and are designed to last roughly 250k miles. changing them does no real harm nor any real good. The only way they are going to clog is if the transmission destroys itself in some other way and plugs it up, in which case, you need both a new filter and a new transmission.

I'm hoping there won't be much crud to disperse. The fluid that was in there wasn't nearly as dark as the fluid I changed out at 109K. It had been 60k miles, so I felt it was due regardless, given the way I use it, but only indication I had of a fluid problem was a 4-3 downshift flare when the temp was above 180°F. Below that temp the downshift was perfect, but at 180 or above it would have a very slight flare. Hoping the new fluid makes that go away. Not that it was a big problem anyway, as I only see that condition when towing something light on the interstate.

Regardless of the outcome, I don't see myself ever changing the fluid on this transmission again. I doubt it ever sees enough miles to worry about doing it again.
