Good point. And then throw Mobil 1 Extended Performance into the mix you really have an oil!
 
Does Mobil thin out in viscocity in extended OCI. Would that cause more wear as we've seen Amsoil tends to thicken slightly at 10-12K OCI but wear rates show excellent results.
 
I read this today and wondered if is a reason oil thickens up so much. Particles, especially catalytic metal particles like copper, iron and lead increase the rate at which oxidation occurs. Particles also strip the oil of its polar additives, including antiwear additives, extreme pressure additives, rust inhibitors and dispersants. Also, numerous very small particles in stable suspension can cause the oil's viscosity to increase.

I don't agree with this. This would imply that using heavier vicosity oil is better and that hasn't proven to be the case.

I think you may have missed the salient points of the matter.


In general (general trending), the higher the viscosity the better the HTHS.

However, using other criteria, a heavier viscosity oil could shear like crazy and have a low HT/HS number.

Much depends on the specific formulation.

The HT/HS testing was developed to create a test that better correlated high temperature shear with actual wear.

What throws me off is M1R and that 76 Racing oil. Why would Mobil make a racing oil with a HT/HS of 3.0? Anyone know the answer to that?
