If I run 12,000 miles per year in Florida could I really just go 1 year between changes and trust it with out an uoa? I see just how packed full of TBN and other good chemistry Amsoil is and I hear the hype about driving 1 year on an oil change but is it really just that easy?

Possibly, with the right engine and driving habits. Always a good idea to get a UOA before extending.

What's the manufacturer's recommendation and your driving habits?

You could use M1 EP for that...I wouldnt pay Amsoil prices when I can get M1 for under 30$ per 5qt jug...I wouldnt hesitate to run 12k miles in a year without a uoa. Keep an eye on oil level and keep it topped up and use a fram ultra. I dont think you would have any issues.

Driving habits and type of vehicle?

Get a synthetic oil filter and your favorite blend of full syn. Do a routine analysis of the oil and have at it. M1 is more than adequate, Castrol Edge just went on sale here and that would work.

True, a Fram Ultra and Castrol Edge EP gold bottle or Mobil1 EP or Amsoil SS and a 12k mile or 1 year oil change time should work for most engines. If you have a turbo.... maybe back it down to 8 months max.

Amsoil has cheap 10K oil as well
I have never seen a Canadian spend-thrift in my life even when your dollar was worth more than ours...... Just an observation of course from 35 years dealing with it.

I don't think any of their oil is cheap.

+1000

Mothers 2013 Fiat Punto 1.4 flex NA, has a tiny 2.5 qts sump and manual says about 10k miles (15k km) or one year on semisyn 15w40 (or bulk from dealer), normal service and thats what it gets, even she doing short trips from day one ... No problem so far 50k miles later, engine is clean at valvetrain cover, neither UOAs needed. A sister used the car also, so it is run very often racking up the distance counter.
I wouldnt do that in such small pan engine.

So when did it automatically become ok to do a 12k mile OCI, in an unknown vehicle, with unknown driving habits, withOUT a UOA? Some of you guys have 1000s of posts and you still say it's ok? Pepsibottle1 has put you to shame.

What if it's carbureted or turbo DI? Used for short trips? Tracked?

Jake777, it is your call - and your vehicle. If you just want to go with the listed recommendations and not worry about it, cool. If you want to be sure that your oil is up to the task and your engine is protected throughout the OCI, then extend with a couple of UOAs.

I'm out.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Castrol Edge Extended Performance & a Fram Ultra. It will be perfect for 1 year/12,000 miles & you won't be emptying your wallet for Amsoil.

My 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 is driven in Florida for an average of 13 miles each way to and from work for a total of 12,000 miles a year. The car has 120,000 miles on it with what I can tell to be a well maintained engine. I have had it for 3 years and have had the oil changed every 5,000 miles

I guess that depends on several factors like income and if you're a lazy
Local convience shopper. I was at Ace hardware with a friend today and PP oil
was $9.95 a quart. Even cheap grade conventional was $5.49 a quart.

You can get Amsoil at a fair price especially if you pick it up.
Like their OE oil at under $5. a quart.

However one of the best oils for wear at Wal-Mart that beats many others is under 22 dollars a jug. QSUD.

Or you could go pay about $4.50/qt for Platinum at Walmart right now. 5 quart jugs are on rollback to $22.XX

Yes and under $20 on Amazon with subscription. Great value!
But I'm one of those guys that has an issue. I get around too much and try everything once and usually buy something else the next OC. I'm sure it's normal here

Problem is I stockpile great deals and then get bored with it. I guess I need a garage sale
