My first post and some questions ...

Looking at Amsoil 10W-40 or RP 10W-40 for my VW 1.8T, mod to about 240HP (crank). VW manual specifies OCI at 15000KM.

The car has been running synthetic all the while, mileage is 56K miles. Last 2 oil change are on wt50 german OWS brand and M1.

Well, things get weird where i am: It's hot (30C) and humid (90%) all year round. Lots of start stop traffic.

And price wise, Amsoil is like US$8.4/qt, while RP is US$6/qt. M1 is like US$10/qt!

Q: Seems like both RP's and Amsoil's 10W40 are not VW502 certified, any idea why?
Q: which oil should i take?
Q: What's a good, slightly conservative OCI to follow for the selected choice of oil?

Thanks in advance for any advice/response.

Amsoil 10W-40 is old school. It's NOT a bad oil, but I don't think it's the best choice for your climate. It gave me unimpressive results with LC in my Volvo, whereas Amsoil 5w30 did great.

I would go with the Amsoil European Car 5W-40 or the 15w40 for your climate (to save a little cash).

Not sure the 10W-40 was evaluated against VW 502.

For your turbo 10K miles is max. Do a UOA at 7.5K miles or so.

How about this then?

Castrol Formula SLX meets the following specifications:
SAE 0W30
API SL/CF
ACEA A3-02, B3-98 Issue 2, B4-02
BMW Longlife 01
MB229.3
VW502.00, 503.01, 505.00

The shop here doesnt carry Amsoil 5W/15W-40. They do carry 5/10W-30 though, but at $9/qt.

Castrol would be around M1 price too, which is what i'm trying to avoid.

Firstly, what is the application you need? I'm from Singapore and have frequent short trips. Not much start-stop traffic. I opt for a 5W30. I know yours is a 1.8T which runs a little hotter so a better quality oil is needed. Go with the SLX-A3. If you run up to Malaysia to collect fines, I would go with Formula RS 10W50.

Hi Genie47, normal appn lah, no tracking etc. But since i do high mileage everyday, and i'm fed up with our high prices for those "established brands" in SGP like M1, shell engine oil, thought it make sense to try RP or Amsoil (cost factor).

Car is not under warranty, so no need to stick to VW cert oil for this purpose.

What's the reason for recommending castrol slx over the 40wt RP/Amsoil oils? Also, given my turbo application (boosted higher than stock), wouldnt a heaver wt oil be better?

Well first of all, since our speed limits here are pretty slow by many standards (90kph on expressways), the engine is not stressed to track conditions. Engine temps won't be that high even for a turbo setup. A nice synthetic 30wt oil will do. I suggest you do a UOA for some oils you have in mind or search the UOA folder for cars with similar engines to yours who have successfully used a particular oil in hot summer weathers. I suggest you search using "audi 1.8t" or "vw 1.8t" I'm sure many hits will come up.

Yes, Redline is expensive locally. So is Amsoil, M1 and SLX-A3. I know the draw towards RP is strong due to the low price it sells here. I urge you to do a 5k or 8k UOA before committing to it fully for a 10 or 15k OCI.

According to this post: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001376#000000

Lubromoly or Liquimoly as we know of locally can be considered as another cheaper candidate. I believe it is a 5W40.

Looks like there is a general scepticism on RP.

Yes, will likely do a UOA at 80K if i do choose RP. U know of other retailers selling LiquiMoly? mxtrading seems to have run out of stock. Thanks so much for helping.

Forklift Enterprises is selling Liquimoly and so is Homely Hardware at Ubi Cresc which is a walk away from Paya Ubi Ind Pk.
