I have a 2001 GMC van that I bought last year, and I'm still catching up on some of the "deferred maintenance" that came with it. I want to replace the gear oil in the rear end, and since this van gets lots of miles, I thought a good synthetic would work well. I think it wants 75w-90, and I'm looking at Severe Gear and Red Line. Any reason to choose one over the other?

I'm a huge fan of Red Line Shockproof! Have a read at their website. It made my bike's transmission and final drive smoooooth.

I used to use redline in my BMW diff. It whined loud, even with 140wt in there. Ive used SF's diff lube since, and it is much quieter. Redline also didnt maintain shift quality as long as the amsoil fluid. Thus Im partial to the amsoil fluids.

I'd go with Amsoil. But I personally do not recommend their Slip-Lok Additive if your vehicle has a limited slip differential. Use Amsoil SVG, and if chatter is noticed then use OEM friction modifier. I had a bad experience with Slip-Lok.

Redline with ford LSD bottle or GM LSD bottle. Found ford lsd is 2-3 dollar cheaper then gm lsd and it work great. All chevy rear diff I change, alway using ford lsd stuff never have problem or noisy.

I would use whatever is easier to get. I have Amsoil Severe Gear in my truck now. It worked good for a while, but started developing some chatter after ~30,000 miles. I put in some GM LS fluid and the chatter went away. The G-80 rear ends don't need LS fluid, but it doesn't hurt, and it actually helped in mine. I will try RedLine in the future. One nice thing about Redline gear oil is that it comes with LS fluid already in it. You won't have to add any.

I have plenty of experience with both fluids in question now, with different cars/transmissions/diffs, and I definitely do not find Amsoil SG to produce less gear whine. They are very comparable in longevity and overall performance.

Specialty Formulations (bolded above)??

In my case, it did not matter if any of the above claimed to have added LS modifier to their fluids as I've ALWAYS had to add more (at least 6 ounces more!) to quiet down my sqawking/groaning Eaton Posi.

On top of that, the ONLY one which seems to work for me (and the Eaton) is the Motorcraft/Ford racing XL-3.

I have Amsoil Severe Gear in the diffs of all 3 of my trucks. In my '97 Ram 1500, no additional additive required and it eliminated a bit of diff noise I had.

In my '04 F350 DRW, no additional additive required and am happy with it.

In my '07 F150, I needed 9 ounces of Slip-Lok to eliminate the chatter, of which I had none of before changing fluid. I wish I had used the Motorcraft additive.
