It may have been covered but I don't remember seeing it. With the old SDF filters you changed the filters after 12500 miles or 6 months and the top up oil was supposed to boost up the additive package in the oil. Now the new Ea filters can be used for one year or 25000 miles. So is the top up boost not needed anymore? Could this be why the newer ASL and ATM oil is thinner than before.

Thanks, I saw that PDF file when looking around on the Amsoil site.

So the top up oil is not needed to boost the oil anymore? Is this why the new ASL and ATM are thinner than before? Is the oil thinner now to deal with more thickening during an extended OCI?

If you change the filter then of course the top up oil is necessary. Let your application, the pdf file, and UOA be your guide as to determining your OCI - if your application needs a "boost", I would recommend changing your interval.

I have not seen a corporate answer, but I believe the lower viscosity is to address the MPG conserving and the thickening IN SOME APPLICATIONS*, but not all engines, which I have addressed here and with HQ many times in the last 6 years.

*please help kill the rumor that Amsoil always thickens, because it doesn't.

I am fine with my current OCI with Amsoil. I understand that if I change the filter more oil will need to be added. I'm not freaking stupid.

It has been explained in the past the filter was changed after 6 months or 12,500 miles to enable a little fresh oil to be added to the crank case.

Maybe it would be more clear if I asked; well I can't think of a way to be more clear.

I don't find any of this cute.

I was not trying to be "cute". Why did you assume this? Please explain.

This is not a private conversation. 1000's of people read the threads here. I know perfectly well you can understand the need to top up with a filter change, but you would be surprised at the number of people who don't understand the concept.

Amsoil is taking a different stand, they are being much more conservative with the OCI recommendations. I'm not trying to be overly simplistic, but the whole "boost" idea was more or less an unspoken benefit of changing the oil filter and toping up. Many people didn't like the concept, regardless of the practicality in some applications. I think it still has it's uses no matter the filter type. As I stated let your application dictate your OCI.

Hey Pablo,
I have many OCIs for Amsoil in the used oil analysis section, and the oil DID NOT THICKEN OUT OF GRADE!

I went over 13,000 miles on Amsoil S2000 0w30 without thickening...

Hope this helps

Thanks for the canned answers and the personal attack. I do understand that a lot of folks read these posts, that's why I asked the question in an open forum.

Cute? Read the thread again please. I asked a good question and you played me for a fool sir. Next thing I guess is you will start making fun of my house like you did the guy a month or two ago.

You know "perfectly well"? How so?

I use Amsoil in 6 cars and 2 motorcycles and am accosted by an Amsoil salesman in such a way. My goodness why would you wish to treat me in such a manner...was my question to difficult for you?

My oil has never thinkened out of grade and it's just plane old 10W30 ATM. It works like a champ in about everything I have to maintain around here.

Pablo just figures it would make him look good to shoot down a pretty good question and torque off an Amsoil customer at the same time.

As of now the answer to my question is read the PDF and change the OCI's on my cars if the oil needs a "boost". This tells me nothing. Do I have to shorten the OCI's now because of the new filters?

KW - I did not attack you personally. I re-read my post. I swear I didn't. Accosted? That is a strong accusation. It seems like you are attacking me.

If you are looking for a short answer, it will be at best, a guess. Not trying to be cute, trying to be precise:

1) No. If your oil was in fine shape at the end of your interval with the SDF or other filter then there should be no need to shorten your interval.

2) Yes. If your oil really needed the (TBN, vis, dilution) boost (doesn't sound like yours did) then maybe the interval should be shortened a bit.

Please, I'm not trying to be a wiseguy. This is basically what I said above in the previous post.

Thanks Pablo! That's all I was looking for. I read the PDF last night, and again this morning. All it gave me is the routine for the new filter and nothing to what happened to the old plan of attack.

Maybe we got out wires crossed some how.

My referance the the old cst vs the new cst was an attempt to shoot a bit out to start a discussion as to why the change. Not to slam the oil or anything like that. Lord knows the UPS man drops enough oil and filters of by my house.

Now I will unwad my panties and press on.
