This is for the Amsoil folks on the site, but open to the benefit of all(not intended to be an argument):

Gentlemen, it's almost time for me to re-stock for my next extended OCI using SSO. Does any of Amsoil's line already meet the latest specs or are the oil's being re-formulated much beyond what is typical(from year to year what have you) in order to get the labels updated to say API-SN/ILSAC GF-5?

I'd personally rather hold off on purchasing if bottles with SN/GF-5 are truly going to be different than the previous spec. I have a feeling they already meet the latest specs, but I haven't heard/seen the info on any updated spec/formulation changes. I'd just like to see what Amsoil has to say officially or not regarding the new spec.

In there last action news that said they were by the end of April, I think.

I think all the "lesser" oils are done but the better stuff is in the works.

I would buy the oil now. Can't be that much diff here...just saying that since I just bought 4 gallons of SSO last month!

Considering you are putting it in that 92' Civic that isn't specified to have SN/GF-5 I say go ahead and get your oil.

People on here will get on me because I use RP, but the fact of the matter is my car was made in 2002 and is spec'd for SJ rated oil, which was the oil BEFORE SL( RP's rating).

So if your already using it and your car agrees, GO FOR IT! You'll catch the SN batch on the next oil change.

Are you asking about SSO,ASL,ASM? They probably will never be SN/GF5, they have higher amounts of phosphorus/zinc etc. I wouldn't want them to be. All of the XL and OE oils are SN/GF5 if you want the latest and "greatest" specs.

I am getting ready to try amsoil for the first time I read
a post that said amsoil XL was just a group3 oil is that true ?

I was wonting something with a little PAO in it.

Don't know whether there is any group IV in the XL line. But what I've been reading is that a group lll with a good additive
package is better that a group lV with a mediocre additive package. What the base oil is does not determine the ability of the oil unless you're in the extreme temp ranges of hot or cold or going for extremely long oil change intervals .

the ONLY amsoil oils currently API certified are the XL and OE lines. Both are SN.

Well, there is a diesel oil that is too, but it is a synthetic blend. That's the PCO oil.

Maby the XL would be ok then my 2002 buick has a OLM that goes off around 6 -7k never used amsoil I hope its good I been using castrol syn.
