Amsoil Gear Oil White Paper - What else is there?

Better for what?
These are all nice choices for light duty gear oils, but for rear differentials, I think AMSOIL missed an opportunity to show off their 75W110 SVT product. It would have been nice if they included some SAE 90 and SAE 110 GL5 and GL 6's too.

The product did not exist at the time the report was done.

Where's the Schaeffer products? Oh yeah, Amsoil doesn't test their products against "industrial" lubricants.... That's why I have used Schaeffer products for the last 15 years...

The AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 was chosen since all other Severe Gear viscosities (75W-110 and 75W-140) would only have better results than the lowest viscosity Severe Gear, gear lube. There was one oil in the test that stated on the bottle GL-6 but since there is no test bench or stand to determine GL-6 performance (GL-6 is obsolete) it was only listed as GL-5. This oil was Torco.

PT1,
In your opinion, shouldn't all automotive gear lubes pass the API GL-5, SAE J306 and Federal test standards for use in automobiles/trucks? If so then why did most of the oils tested including some name brand syntheitcs fail at least one of the required tests and some many of the required tests? Wouldn't you want to know which oils failed before you laid out good money and installed it into your car or truck? That's why the study was done.

It is amazing that some fluids did NOT meet the spec's that the bottle carried. Batch blending issues? quality control issues?

Regardless of what gear oil used, a 30k/2yr change interval should be considered. If you want to go longer, simply pay for a UOA and see how your fluid choice is doing in your application with your driving style.

There are plenty of gear oils out there that Amsoil didn't test. They seem to cover the popular ones available at the local stores, along with some online competitors. These tests aren't free. Maybe if we sponsored the test, we could get some of the other brands included. Lets raise a couple hundred thou$and and send the check to Amsoil with the request to test every known gear oil brand and weight for comparison. I'd rather see the money go into R&D for future product development, improvement, manufacturing control..... regardless of brand.
