I've been trying to learn as much as I can about the oil world. From what I've gathered so far, synthetic oil is the way to go if you like your engine. And if you're going to use synthetic oil, it makes sense to use a filter with a synthetic media (due to molecule strands in synth oil being smaller than dino and synthetic filter media being designed to filter out smaller particles). The easiest synthetic filter for me to get my hands on is an Amsoil unit, but I haven't read anything here regarding their product. What is the common opinion out there regarding this topic?

Grease 3 ver study at top of this site tests an Amsoil SDF-24 with top results.

Price?

Amsoil Gr. 1 - $10.10, pref. customer $7.50
Mobil 1 - $9.99

But the shipping (min $5.75?) add does make the cost escalate.

I've been useing amsoil on my dodge truck, chevy tracker, kawasaki vulcan for about 5 years. They are top quality. They are a little pricey, but if you run them 10-12,000 miles its not bad. As for shipping if you order it with two or more at a time and oil. It works out just fine. And it come right to your front door.

My problem is that Amsoil and Purolator One are the only two synthetic membrane filters available in this area. And Purolator One is double the price. If I'm not mistaken, the others mentioned above are paper filters.

Ahhh, now I see the problem. You are in Canada. Oil filters seem so be a bit of a problem there.

If the Amsoil is that much cheaper than the other filters on the market, go for it. As I said before, it is a decent filter.

I'm not sure how the pricing is for the NAPA Gold filters, but they should be a synth media. It should say something about "T03 glass enhanced media" somewhere on the box.

Yeah, we seem to be a wee bit filter retarded here. Mobil's synth filter isn't even sold in Canada and the Purolator One unit is only at high performance shops as a special order. What's with that? There is a Napa dealership not far from me. I'll take the dog-sled and check out the Napa Gold filter soon.

Thanks for the tip.

Napa Gold filters are reasonably priced, $5-7 in my neighborhood. I'll be switching to them when my stock of Amsoil filters runs out. They ran me about $13 each+shipping so I thought I'd give something cheaper a try.

I stopped by the local Shell bulk station today(they're the only place to buy Napa/Wix filters in my town) and priced out some filters. The Napa Gold 1515(Ford FL1A equivalent) was $4.66 and the 1396 for my Pontiac Vibe was $8.33. So I ordered 2 cases of 1515's and I'll be back for the 1394's when my current stock runs out. You guys out east may even be able to get them cheaper.
