Amsoil Ecoboost 70k mile engine taken apart

The famous Ford Tech Makuloco took apart a 3.5 liter Ecoboost engine at about 70000 miles and stated this is the cleanest engine he ever came across. Amsoil was used at 5000 mile intervals.

Saw that yesterday. Sadly it didn't do anything for the phasers.....dang shame too after all that work on the owners part. Here's to hoping redesign #3 is the magic number.

Pretty though. I'm pretty confident my 3.5 will be similar with my maintenance choices.

That's clean but why did the engine fail with 70000 miles ? It takes more than cleanness to make a engine last there must have been a lot of wear in the engine !!

Defective phasers

Ford can't spec a cam phaser to save their lives. No oil will fix engineering/design flaws.

5k mile intervals. Easy pz for SS; if that was the Amsoil used.

Impressive, but then again 5k mile OCIs have a lot to do with this. Most engines would be reasonably clean with that kind of maintenance plan.

If they used a cheaper oil, they would have more money to pay for the repair.

As clean as it is, it should be using SS every 5k.

I’ve never seen the front timing cover so clean on one of these on any oil or oci. Normally there’s some discoloration. It really is impressive.

Full disclosure...there were a few issues with the earlier 3.5 liter Ecoboost engine that no oil could solve like the cam phasers. In the newer models the engine has been extensively modified for reliability.

When it comes to phasers there will be a violent rattle on startup and if ignored will later turn into a greater problem. Ford does have a kit specifically for the phaser issue.

Here is a list of modifications done in newer 3.5 engines.

Background:

"2012 Cruze Eco 1.4L Turbo. This car has seen nothing but AMSOIL Signature Series 5w30 since 2013, and has been tuned since as well, first with Trifecta then with BNR, making about 50hp and 70lb-ft more power *to the wheels.* Starting in about 2015, the car was used to tow my 14' boat as well as my utility trailer and various uhaul trailers. Since I started working from home full time in 2015, most of the driving was short trips, wide open throttle to redline daily.
At 72k miles, I pulled...
