Amsoil EaO - why change before 25,000 miles?

The Amsoil website says:
"If used in conjunction with AMSOIL Motor Oil that is being changed at intervals less than 25,000 miles, the EaO Filter should be changed at the same time."

What's the reasoning for this? For instance, why do they not allow me to run a 10k OCI and then another 10k OCI on the same filter (using Amsoil exclusively)? They talk about how the filter is sturdy enough for extended intervals, why not two short ones? I'm willing to deal with a negligible amount of dirty oil stuck in the filter at the time of oil change.

I think the filter can handle multiple OCIs totalling less than 25k, it's just that Amsoil will only stand behind one OCI so they can eliminate any unforseen liabilities. What do you think?
 
If the time base is appropriate ..sure you can.


The filter is setup for this interval:

AMSOIL EaO Filters are guaranteed for 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first, when used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in normal service. In severe service, change oil and filter at recommended severe service oil drain interval.

So ..if you're doing 25k (or less) and want to swap it out midway ...fine. It assumes a match between one year between the two.

I've used it for, iirc, 4+ 5k PP intervals. The service was normally 18k/year. The oil wasn't fatigued @ 5k ..the filter was not fatigued at 20k.
 
Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I think the EaO will be okay for two of my intervals.

But doesn't the italicized statement essentially nullify the 25k/1 year statement? Hypothetically, if my engine seized due to oil issues and I cited the intervals as proof of why Amsoil should pay for the repairs, wouldn't they use the first statement as a disclaimer to avoid liability?
 
The guaranty is the limit of both the oil AND filter. There's no limitation in reduction on either independently.

That is, they're not going to void the mileage limitation on the oil due to the filter being changed early. They're not going to void the mileage limitation on the filter for the oil being changed early ...as long as both were rated at the mileage limitation (or time) that was applicable for both.


Just to be sure I understand what you're doing, what's your annual mileage?
 
Ah, I see your meaning.

I drive roughly 20k per year. Depending on how my next UOA looks, I'll use one filter for a full year and swap it, or do two 10k intervals within one year and swap it.

I have confidence in the TBN but I'm a bit worried about insolubles. Either way, other analyses show SSO to be a stellar performer.
 
You're just fine in doing it that way ..but at 20k ..you should be just fine with both @ one year. I'll grant you it's not a natural act

Honestly, I'm more worried about the gasket being totally seized onto the block after being there so long. Given the awkward filter location, that translates to a three-hour oil change, including the cursing and consuming of alcohol.

If you lubricate it with engine oil before putting on and tighten properly (not cranking the snot out of it) it will come off just fine.

I agree, as long as you lube the o-ring and you should be fine. We change oil in heavyduty over the road trucks usually no sooner than 20,000miles, and the fuel filters no sooner than twice that amount, and I've never had a problem with a o-ring sticking fast.
