Amsoil EA Filters 2022 vs 2024

Does anyone know when these moved to the Fram manufacturing line? I purchased a case of EA15k13 (Fram 7317) in 2022, and a single EA15k20 in 2025 for a different application. Having 5 remaining EA15k13 filter from 2022, I cut open one of them to compare with the EA15k20 from 2025- there are a lot of differences. The 2025 filter is assembled sloppily, with dirt and glue in globs the media. The media is different, and it is crimped differently and the stamping of the relief is very different.

The Oil Filters from years ago, not sure what year, they were awesome. CARQUEST Premium Blue seems to be the best bang for the buck. Use what you have as far as Oil Filters and then check back to see what the best bang for the buck is. The other thought is the way things are going with oil filters purchase the cheapest oil filter since the more expensive oil filters are not worth the money.

Here is another thought, it is better to have the best oil with a cheap oil filter as opposed to having the best oil filter with a cheap oil!
 
I am going to keep and use the remaining EA15k13’s- even though these do not have the internal bypass they used to have- this looks pretty good to me compared to more recent filters

It's even better to have the best oil with the best oil filter. 😄
 
Both of those Amsoil filters look to have some leaf spring to end cap "seal" leak gaps. The one with the smooth looking leaf spring must have a warped leaf spring that won't sit flat on the end cap.

I guess the way things are going, the CARQUEST Premium Blue is the best Oil Filter now, you are the Oil Filter Expert? I am sure you will tell me what the best oil is, looks like you will be checking with a certain member, and come back and give me the answer.

Yes, the Carquest Premium is hard to beat for a filter rated up to 10K miles.

I am sure you will tell me what the best oil is, looks like you will be checking with a certain member, and come back and give me the answer.

Best design (no leaf spring or louvers and has silicone ADBV and base gasket and a pretty thick strong can), construction quality (as seen in every C&P) and efficiency (99% @ 20u) for the price, even better price if you can use an AAP discount code. It's pretty much a no-brainer at this point.

I thought that number was only seen in Fram Ultra or Amsoil EaO Oil Filters. I can get a CarQuest Premium Blue Oil Filter for my car that is the same price as a Fram Ultra and the Royal Purple Oil Filter would be more expensive and not be worth the price of admission?

Guess you haven't been seeing all the threads where the Carquest Premium efficiency has been talked about. The current Ultra and Royal Purple both have possible ruffled leaf springs (neither uses a leaf spring gasket, just metal-on-metal), so getting away from that design aspect is a plus when going to something like the Carquest Premium.

Between the Car quest and Microguard Select Extended Performance which one do you prefer?

I've used both (both efficient enough for me), but the Carquest Premium is advertised as a little better efficiency. You can get the Carquest Priemium for less if you can find a valid on-line purchase discount code. I'd order them on-line with the discount code, then pick them up in person at the store. That also allowed be to inspect the filter for any damage before paying. Guy at the counter had no problem with me looking at them while he watched me do so.

The smooth spring one has much less leakage- and fits tightly in the filter. The wavy one is not flat or square and fits loosely in the filter. If you push on the smooth one like it would be as installed it seals better, the wavy one distorts more and seals less.

In the photos, I see "nubs" on either the inside of the end cap or on the OD of the ring area on the leaf spring that fits down into the end cap hole. Those nubs prevent any sealing at that interface, so the "tightness" of the fit has nothing to do with the actual sealing. The only "seal" is the metal-to-metal contact between the top of the end cap and that area that gets ruffled up from stamping.

I agree with you that the notion of "seal" is very weak. Also- that tightness is a poor descriptor of leakage probability, regardless if true. My only intent is to show that the design changes between these years increased the likelihood and quantity of bypassed oil. The older spring has reliefs or notches in the spring and a nubs in the filter - the new one only has a nibs on the spring, while the metal ring in the filter cartridge on the new filter is smooth, ensuring a larger gap. On the older filter, the nubs and the reliefs line up and help to minimize the gap.
