This is what they think " Test show that AMSOIL Ea Air Filters have more than three times the air flow of filters that use cellulose media alone."

but really tho is this an air filter construction problem or did dodge not use a big enough filter box?

I dont know. The last one, when we pulled the new Fram out of the box, it was obviously upgraded. Ill get a pic.

Doesn't surprise me, I think the amsoil filter is essentially paper plus the nanofiber tech from donaldson powercores, so I assumed they didn't flow very well. The reason it doesn't matter for the powercores is b/c they are massive rolls of media compared to the pleated filter shown, powercore is really the best choice for a diesel IMO. When I researched filters for my vehicle I narrowed it down to the powercore or an AEM dryflow, I chose the dryflow since I could keep cleaning and reusing it and still have good filtration.

Are the trucks with the sucked-in filters chipped? The Cummins engines have so much more power available than they are tuned deliver in the pickups that it's easy to get them into a much higher airflow category with a bit of tuning. From what I've seen, you can about double the airflow requirements with a tune alone.
 
I dont know. I didnt see any thing obvious, like a chip in the middle of a wiring harness, but that does not mean the computer wasnt reprogrammed, or something similar.

Interesting observation; I wonder if the truck in the original video is chipped/tuned. That might explain the Ea running out of out of flow, though its still not good since its supposed to have 3 times flow....
 
I don't believe the amsoil filters flow more than a paper equivalent, it just doesn't make sense to me. You have standard paper which is cellulose, then you have amsoil filters which are cellulose w/ the nanofiber on top. Pic from amsoil's site

. Even their explanation of how they flow better is hard for me to understand,
"AMSOIL Ea Air Filters allow more airflow than filters that use cellulose media alone. Cellulose fibers are larger than nanofibers, and have larger spaces between the fibers, causing contaminants to load in the depth of the media and plug the airflow path, which results in higher restriction and less capacity. The synthetic nanofibers in Ea Filter media have submicron diameters and small interfiber spaces, which result in more contaminants being captured on the surface of the media and lower restriction."
Adding another layer whether more or less porous can only create more restriction. I also can't really fathom how capturing more particles on the surface of the filter will give it longer life and/or better airflow. Really that whole quote is at odds w/ what I have read about air filters.

Well, if you take a stock Cummins, say a 5.9L 4-valve, "600" (lbs-ft of torque) common rail it will generate about 30 psi boost max. That would give it a stock maximum airflow of approximately 850 cfm. The stock air filter is sized, with a safety margin, for that amount of air flow.

Using the various tuning tools available, including a new turbo but often only with a tune or a "boost fooler" (a device that modifies the boost input into the PCM), boost pressure can easily go up to 40, and with other mods 48 psi. That would require 1047 and 1200 cfm respectively. All numbers created on a calculator used to determine turbocharger sizes.

Factor in a dirty air filter and you can see why modifications were my first thought. Many of those tunes use a programmer, so it wouldn't be obvious.

As to 3x the flow... it could be they chose the worst flowing media on the market for comparison... a typical sales tactic.

Wix seems to list two different filters for some of these Cummins engines: a 2" and a 4" deep filter.

Perhaps the 4" pleated filter would flow more adequtely for these engines.

It's really hard to tell from these photoes (I'll have to look up dimenions later) but those air filters really don't look all that big.

That's a puny sized filter for a big diesel. Dodge dropped the ball on that one. Cummins built a great engine but leave it to Dodge to get the simplest thing wrong.
 
I wonder why no Amsoil dealers posted???????

But comparing a diesel to a gas engine is not the same. I use their Ea air filters and work very nice in my engines (gas).

then again what other mods are on the YT video..
