Hey guys and gals, this is my first post and signed up because I need some advice on which Amsoil motor oil to run with. I have been running Amsoil for the last 4-5 years or so in my Audi B5 A4 (Big Turbo in the works). I also use their transmission fluid and gear oil for my rear differential. Among that, I have Amsoil PS fluid I have yet to swap in, but have just been lazy. In other words, I run all Amsoil except for my brake fluid (Motul 5.1) and Coolant (factory G12). Even tried out their oil filter last year, but decided to stick with the OEM one.

I run the Euro Blend 5w40 in the summer and Signature Series 0w30 in the winter (Shell Rotella T6 in there now, because I had an oil leak by the oil sender for my gauge and I don't like mixing oils. So, ran to Walmart and picked up a gallon of this to swap in. Been on it for like 500-1000 miles). But last time I was on their website, I noticed that they now offer more motor oil choices. Now, I am sort of conflicted on what I should run.

Signature Series 5w30 all year round?
Euro Blend 5w30 all year round?
Or stay with the Euro 5w40 in the summer and Signature 0w30 in the winter?

Other sugestions welcome. Thanks guys!

The manual calls for 40wt oil, I would follow that to the key if it is the 1.8t, especially if you modified its performance.

I would do Rotella t6 5w40 year round or m1 0w40 and save the money spent on Amsoil for something else. if you do decide to stick with amsoil, at least run the euro 5w40.

It actually approves 5w30, 5w40, and 0w40 weight for 98-04 Audi/VW engines. But that list along with a whole bunch of what Audi/VW does is ridiculous. Like...saying that we have a lifetime manual transmission fluid that never needs to be changed?????

When I started runing Amsoil, it was not even on their approved list. It may be on the newer version of the approved list, but never on mine. I ran with it anyways, and it has made my engine quieter over the years. I chose the Signature Series 0w30 because the website stated that is can be substituded for 5w30 (Ok, just went to the website to cross quote in here, but they have changed or ommitted their information uo a bit. But when I first started running Amsoil, the description stated that the Signature Series 0w30 can be used to substitute 5w30 and that is why I ran with it). And the European Blend 5w40 for obvious reasons. Anyways, I don't plan to run 5w40 weight in the winter.

Edit: I also wanted to add that I drive my car maybe 7-10k miles per year. Not much at all. So, I just do one oil change before winter, and one more after winter. That is one reason cost does not affect me as much as it would another. But this summer I changed it 3 times so far. Once because it was summer, twice because I took a vacation (drove), and third time because of low oil and I don't like mixing.

Have you considered using Motul VW Specific 505.00 502.00 5W-40 oil?
Your 1.8T is known for being hard on oil AND you mentioned bigger turbo in works.
Amsoil Euro 5W-40 is low SAPS oil. I ran it successfully in the past and it worked well in my application although my OCI was rather short (actually really short).
Otherwise a HDEO would be my next choice.
Also Amsoil AMO 10W-40 with high ZDDP and more shear stable may be very suitable.

IMO, I would use DEO.

The original AFL (5w40 Euro Formula) was a stout oil when it was initially introduced. Then they reformulated it about 2004 to perform similarly to 505.01 oils, and it became more or less, a downgrade.

DEO, which is a HDEO 5w40, is closer to the original AFL formulation.

^You saying I should use Amsoil 5w40 deisel engine oil in my engine? Any negative effects of doing so?

As for Motul, I guess it is about preferance. For some odd reason, I just got hooked and used to running Amsoil fluids. But I have considered Motul on the list of brands I was going to use when I aquired my Audi, and inevitably ended up sticking with Amsoil.

Amsoil is a rather good motor oil IMO. When I took the valve cover and oil pan off of my vehicle, the inside of the block was rather clean and sludge free (these little engines are very prone to that). I have never sent in my oil to get it analysed, but I think I may do that on my next couple of oil changes.

No harm at all. I've run DEO 5w-40 and I've run HDD 5w30 in gasoline engines. Despite the "common" name these oils and other such oils on the market are not diesel (only) oils. They are Heavy Duty Engine Oils (HDEO) - dual use/fleet engine oils. True diesel (only) oils are a whole different category. The cool thing about DEO and the CJ-4 oils in general - they have proven to be excellent oils, and yet they are lower SAPS oils (relative to old school HDEO's)

If you want to go 5w30 in the winter, try Amsoil HDD 5w30 -it's NOT a low SAPS oil, but it's the best of both worlds - a new tech synthetic base oil with a tried and true robust additive pack.

Yes Amsoil is a good motor oil. Some here try to talk others out of Amsoil, usually it's to try to save you just a little money. Lately the savings difference really isn't there. Others have stranger reasons.

How about "D. None of the above".... I would use 5W40 Year Round...you're in New York, I am guessing it's not way upstate, so the winters aren't that severe...the Euro 5W40 Amsoil will be fine...

My mom's old Audi had an oil temp gauge, so did my old Volvo. In both CT and VT, there was no significant difference in oil temp from summer to winter, unless you were really pushing it in summer. So, the 5WXX synthetic will be fine on start-up in the cold...and you want the same weight for the same oil temp.

^So, you saying it is something like the placebo effect I have when I feel my car starting harsher with the 5w40 weight in the winter?

I think keeping all things fair, I am not going to sway from what I am used to running. If anything, I'll try out the 5w30 Signature Series instead of the 0w30 (which I was running when they had no 5w30 signature series). And try that heavy duty deisel oil sometime in the future.

Thanks guys!

I'm in NJ and I have been running the 5W-40 for years in my S4 and now in my A4. I only changed to Total Energy 9000 0w30 for the winter in both to see if I get some better MPG with the winter fuel but will be back to the 5W-40 next oil change.
