amsoil bypass filter leaking

hey guys,

i am running an amsoil bypass filter on my wife's ford escape. i can't remember which one it is but i think it is a BK-13. anyways, i was going to change out her oil and filters at the begining of november, but i noticed today that there was oil leaking from the top of the bypass filter. my wife said it just started leaking two nights ago. i checked everything around it, the hoses, fittings and such, but the oil was leaking from the top of the bypass filter. the filter was tight and hadn't appeared to have bottomed out on anything. i have been using this set up since the car new and had it on her previous truck and we never had this happen.

i changed the filters and fluids this morning and it has not leaked.

any ideas what caused the leak??

Did it appear to be the gasket ..or the end plate ..or the crimped seam??

I'd send it back to Amsoil to get their take on it.

i never thought about sending it back to amsoil for their opinion. it was leaking from the top, like a failed gasket, but everything was still tight and after i removed it, the gasket seemed fine. this it the first time i have seen this happen. i will have to clean it up and take a better look at it.

I've gotten leakage on my Permacool mount ..but it was the mount. They just couldn't seem to get the machining right on them. It wasn't leakage, per se~, but weepage/seepage. In my case it could have been the horizontal orientation of the big filters on the cheap mount..now that I think about it.

i just checked it again before the wife left for work....no leaks... i also thought maybe it was the fittings or a bad hose leading to the filter mount, but nothing is leaking now.

Well, that tends to narrow it down.

Probably the crimped end was leaking, not all that common to see...but it does happen.
