I have a 06' silverado with 4.8 v8 25k. My first 2 oil changes@3k each with castrol 5w30.Next 3@4k or so with penzoil plat. the castol went black after 2k.the PP wnet black at 3500 miles. my fill of amsoil currently at 4800 miles still looks cleaner than new oil in the bottle.I can clearly see the cross hatches on the dipstick. The PP started using oil at 4000 miles the amsoil hasn't used any yet.Plan on doing a UOA at 6K who should i go with?

The ASL 5w-30 is a great oil. I have been running it for 10,000 mile OCI's in my 2006 Dodge Ram 4.7 V8. I now how 38,000 miles on the truck, and it is doing fine.

Keep in mind that the color of the oil doesnt always tell the story, some oils just react different.

Is there anything fundamentally different about the 4.8L vs. other SBC's?

Well, first a 4800 is not a small block Chevy no matter what GM may wish people to think. They share as many parts as Late 1960's SOHC Pontiac I-6 and the current Atlas DOHC I-6 in the TrailBlazer,

Its part of the family that started with the 1997 LS1 Corvette. Other than that its pretty similar to the LS1/LS6 5.7L, LS2 6.0L, and 5300, 6000, 6200.

I guess I was using SBC in the wide sense of the term, sorry for being unclear. However, you did answer me query.

Gene, if Chevrolet calls it a Small-Block Chevy, then, its a Small-Block Chevy. I've seen the marketing and they do call the new generations of the engine, small-blocks. It's not a "Gen I" SBC. Saying its not a SBC is like saying the new Corvette is not a Corvette because it is not a first generation Corvette. I agree it does not share parts with an old SBC, but the 2007 Corvette doesn't share anything with a 50's 'vette either.

Back to the original topic, I've used ASL and it is good, but at 6K OCIs, I'm not sure you really need it unless the engine is operating in some kind of extreme/severe duty.

thanks everyone for their post.I plan on keeping this truck until it dies, but i could use some advice on which UOA is the best to get blackstone or dyson?

I've never had a Dyson report but if you want "the best" as you've stated, then that's the route to take. The Blackstone report is good but not nearly as in-depth as a Dyson report is going to be. IMO

Also, you did not mention how long you were planning for an OCI. If you are planning to use the OLM I'll mention that the XL line of oils are great. If you are going to run 10-12K or more, then ASL is good. On my truck, with substantially more miles, the ASL caused the most noise at start-up (piston-slap), followed by the TSO. The XL 5W-30 was quieter but had higher consumption. If piston slap is not an issue/concern, then the ASL is probably about the best to use because it is so thin (comparatively) at start-up and the additive pack is made for extended drains. Plus it is only about $1 more than the XL.
