Amsoil 5W-40 vs. Redline 5W-40?

Is the only major difference between the two is one is from PAO basestock and the Redline is from a ester stock? Redline's TBN = 15.1???

I believe those here who actually know about their chemistry will tell you that the two companies use a difference approach chemistry-wise. To me, that constitutes a "major" difference, but it may or may not make a difference in any particular application.

I have not used Amsoil 5W40 so I have no clue about it! I have used Redline 5W40 and loved it!!! It was smooth,quite and powerful. THe engine felt like it was friction free!! I used it dure a Michigan winter in temp.'s down to -18°F!! WHile I know it can get colder then that how many people here have tried a 5W40 down to that low of a temp?

I've used both, Redline more than Amsoil. But I preferred the Red Line. You can often drop down a viscosity grade with Red Line as it runs thick at temperature. So I'd be comparing Red Line 10w30 with the Ams 5w-40 here.

But you can't go wrong with either. BOTH are top tier fluids and Amsoil is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.

You can drop down a grade with Amsoil as well ...in fact I've been doing it in my Audi/VW engines for the past twenty years....

You'll get the best performance in the 1.8L VW/Audi turbos with an xw-30 (or "thin" 0w-40) that meets the VW 502.00/505.00 specifications. It's not necessary at all to run a 4.0-4.3 Centipoise @ 150C, lube in this high rpm application.
