I have been running Amsoil in my GSX-R1000 track bike and DRZ 400SM street/track.

I use very short intervals for the gixxer due to the amount of time it spends in high RPM range and 1000-1500 miles on the DRZ.

I have no complaints regarding Amsoil and engine internals look like new.

With the increase cost for 2014 I need to cut my budget and I am thinking of doing this by switching to Rotella.

The options at my local Walmart are

Shell Rotella® T Triple Protection Heavy Duty Engine Oil

Shell Rotella® T5 Synthetic Blend Technology Heavy Duty Engine Oil

Shell Rotella® T6 Full Synthetic Heavy Duty Engine Oil

Which oil would you go with?

Would you stick with Amsoil and cut elsewhere?

Thanks

thoughts: Is it an option to run the Amsoil longer, longer enough to offset the saving you'd be getting from putting a cheaper oil in there?

Have you had any analysis done to show you if the Amsoil has longer service than you are giving it?

Really, I'm surprised by the votes for Amsoil. It's a great oil, don't get me wrong, but some here have had fantastic used oil analysis using 15w40 Rotella (and other brands).

Check out some of the posts by sunruh, he has put many oils through the ringer and can attest to the quality of a good HDEO.

Surprised?

Sunruh was also surprised and admitted that the Amsoil didn't shear and had great wear numbers. I don't think going from Amsoil 20W-50 to a 15w40 always results in a "fantastic UOA".

In my 106 cube Harley I'm using conventional rotella instead of a synthetic. I'm no longer interested in extended drains and rotella is cheap, which means I change it often and don't care.
Rotella is an excellent bike oil. Forget the synthetics.

yep, it only took them a DECADE to produce an oil that actually matched their marketing.
(which is better than say...castrol)

but now they finally do have an oil worth buying.

Rotella, gtx or vr1 . Autozone has vr1 right now for $6a quart in my area... I like how smooth rotella has made my 110"harley motor. Depending on my new oil temps with my oil cooler I'll either stay with rotella 1540 or go to gtx again....

Last year running gtx in my bike touching 250/270° I didn't burn any oil between changes. Nor drippppedddd any =)=)=)=)=)=) no Harley punnn intended

I'd stick with the 20W-50 in the track bike, although you can find a cheaper brand.

The 5W-40 should be OK in the liquid cooled DRZ unless you are in a very hot climate. If that's the case, I'd stick with a lower cost 20W-50 as well.

im afraid that once amsoil has been in your engine, use of any other oil than it will ruin your bikes engine. the amsoil oil has been engineered on the planet pluto by aliens and has the highest lubricity of any oil thus any mixture with earths oil compounds will cause complete engine failure.

this is what the amsoil "local rep" has told regarding their oil, this was while he was on his coffee break on the garbage truck he works off the back of!

I am not sure of the oil temps but the coolant temps are 220F to 228F as I am coming down pit lane.

I plan to do a few used oil analysis this season at different intervals.

Yes Sunruh is the oil guru and I trust him 100%.

I read in an older Harley publication that oil temps above 250 start degrading the oil. I run Rotella 15w40 in my all stock Harley 96" bike which calls for 20W-50. The engine runs just as quiet as before. I will change it every 2K miles and the filter every other oil change.

+1

With a short drain like that, don't spend money needlessly.

Oil won't start to "degrade" until it's placed in service, in a motor. So, the first time the motor is started, the degradation process begins. Harley motors are designed to run at approximately 230f. Some will run hotter. And if you look at every UOA posted here you won't see one reference that the oil has degraded due to heat. In fact you will see they recommend going longer then the recommended 5k oci. Changing oil at 2k is really a waste of oil and money.,,
