I know not everyone on the forum is from America, so please pardon the intrusion from those that are not or have no interest. I wrote this yesterday in preparation for the upcoming Independence Day holiday. Please do not turn this into something political as it is not intended to be. Administrators - I contacted Helen for approval before posting this.

With all of that out of the way - please enjoy!

America

I'm proud to be an American and I know freedom isn't free,
I'm thankful for all the opportunities, justice, and our liberty.
We may stumble or sometimes fall, but don't tread on me,
For when you do you face the force of each of my decrees.

After rising from the clutches of oppression and red coats,
This land is worthy of much more than we choose to devote.
Somehow we've lost sight and vision of the American dream,
Fostered mostly by those bound to do harm with evil schemes.

Our problems are deeper than just needing to all get along,
Look past the superficial and stop doing each other so wrong.
Think of the past pride and willingness to work together as one,
Common foes were defeated and we welcomed the rising sun.

This a land filled with good, plenty, and with bountiful harvest,
We don’t need a competition to try and rise above all the rest.
While the variety brought in seems to pacify all of our wants and wishes,
If we don't curtail the spending, we'll again have to rise from the ashes.

In a land so large with all climates, 'scapes, and sites in definition,
There must surely be room for every clan, creed, and religion.
We can be so giving and open that it can sometimes make us blind,
Open your eyes America, we don't always have to accept the opine.

I reflect upon all of the history that was made just within my time,
We've advanced humanity, built common good, and more than I remind.
They say a nation is built upon the deeds, morals, and sacrifices of the few,
We should never forget those ones who gave all with little ado.

So I think though some problems and trials in the land do still exist,
The foundation is still solid, the structure is sound, so carve out the grist.
After all, we are still "The People" and are nothing if we're not so bold,
Come together, remove those leaders who aren't representing the fold.

So I'll spend this Independence Day in a place of great national importance,
Lives were lost, sacrifices made, heroes were born in moments of grievance.
Standing in that place with the wind soft and somber, tears will wet my cheeks,
For I cannot forget those men who died so that we all can reach those peaks.

Yes, there are some who would try to destroy this place that I call home,
Alas, they fail to realize this is not a kingdom, but a common united tome.
She has endured much strife, toil, and heartache but still stands even on this day,
I am so proud as all of you, I love this land and all it is…so God Bless the USA!

Love it!

Well writen..

It.s wery american from my point of view (good since it is written for your countrymen) here many would consider it a bit high flying and maybe a bit too emotionel with the tear on the cheek and all.

That being said people sitting down and making an efford with words deserves respekt.

But good luck with performing it. No doubt your a proud American :)

Yes; I did (definitely not plagiarized). I am a bit of a writer (am working on an adventure novel now) and I pen poems from time to time. The writing bug bit me in the middle of my MSCIS/ISS at Boston University (good timing for all of the papers that were needed) and so I try to foster it when I can.

Enjoy!

Thank you for writing this. I have passed it on to several of my friends and they appreciated it being posted for the 4th.

Thank you to all our military past and present for the sacrifices they have and are making to protect our freedom.

Helen

Well said.

Happy Independence Day! Take time to reflect and to remember those who fought and died to win the independence and liberties we enjoy today, even though they are under attack.
