So, still going to put ATi er, I mean, AMD Radeons on Intel boards?

Until Intel has a viable alternative..... Probably. *cry*

ATI is definitely the more "prestigious" arm of the company. I think this is a bad move in many ways.

They will simply be "Radeon Graphics" in that case, I believe.

According to AMD, the AMD name is more, I dunno the best word I can think of is "renowned" or something like that.

They said those stickers were for OEMs who didnt want people confused about what brand of stuff was in their computer. They will still be AMD cards just the same. :P

nVidia just sucks, so does this news.

Did the same team that market IBM's OS/2 arrive at this decision? Brilliance! (NOT!)

Would EMC rebranding VMware as "EMCware"? I think not.

Stupid.

Agreed. And will really tweak-off the "enthusiasts" who buy the high-end cards to slap them on Intel-based boards with Intel CPU's. People like me. I've been through THREE ATI cards in less than 12 months. Currently sitting with a 5870.

[censored], that does suck.
I do like AMD still though, and I want them to come out with an i7 competitor soon.. They used to be the best, now it's Intel if you actually care about having the best available to the general consumer.

I am currently running an ATI 4890 and I love it. Never had any major issues with ATI cards.

IMO, AMD has a big weakness in terms of the heat their mobile processors generate. That is the main reason we went Intel (i5) a few months ago with our new laptop.

It also has a nVidia 310 graphics card with Optimus. Happy with the video card so far. I'm not a gamer, though.

This just sucks. Like Overkill, I'm an Intel CPU and ATi GPU fan.

In my younger days I was an AMD fan, but the poor excuses for processors they've brought to market since the Socket A era have soured my opinion of the company. I just can't see myself buying an AMD branded chip. My Athlon XP 1800+ was so sweet for it's time, like the K6-3 before it and the K6-2 before that. Now, for almost ten years they've been shipping trash. What a shame to see ATi meet this fate.

Agreed. ATI has better brand recognition for graphics. Most people that care know AMD has owned ATI for several years now, but this just doesn't seem like the right thing to do. Re-branding is not an easy (or cheap) task.

As long as they still make good reliable graphics hardware, that's what really matters.

To put this another way:

A company that currently OWNS the graphic market; their name is synonymous with quality, performance-oriented graphics hardware is having their name replaced by a company who's name is synonymous with "inexpensive" CPU's; ones people buy when they can't justify the price of an Intel processor on a matching Intel board... A CPU you slap on a SiS [censored] chipset to build a "bargain" system.

While the AMD brand may have more global "recognition", it has no where near the brand PRESTIGE that ATI has. And AMD will be burying that with the ATI name. A HUGE mistake in my opinion.

I totally agree!

Speaking of AMD. Just started building another system with the AMD Phenom Black Edition 965. I will be using the Nvidia EVGA GPU. Always used NVIDIA cards and AMD CPU's. I own stock in both Intel and AMD. I could have bought either, but chose AMD. Incidently I will be purchasing more AMD stock.

Durability. Never had a problem with either NVIDIA or AMD. Could that change? Sure.
