I spoke to somebody that works at one of those reserved seating + food&drinks theaters. The waiters there put up with a lot to stumble around in the dark and bother people. I agree people should eat&drink before/after the movie. Ridiculous that people can't wait to eat. We're fat enough already.

I guess we can't (would like to) ban popcorn, soda, and candy (you know, the $6 Coke...) too.

The AMC here is nice with reserved seating. They have the nice big electric reclining seats and armrests that can be put up or down, convenient if you're there with your significant other.

Have found out the hard way to always purchase tickets online in advance. Show up expecting to walk in and get seats and they're sold out or the only seats left aren't together.

Well, just to put some fuel on the fire, you do realize that AMC is now owned by a Chinese company? My closest one is in an OK area but there are still gang issues, and parking isn't free but is cheaper/longer with validation. It's a public place, and they simply can't keep people out. They have armed security. Also, the new owners killed the old unrestricted "Gold" passes that I could get at Costco for $8 each in a two pack.

Our closest Cinemark location operates under the Century Theaters name. They have reserved seating only for "XD" seats. The prices are lower than AMC (especially cheaper afternoon matinee) and they have free parking.

What I like are the quirky near independents. We have a nearby theater with sofas, office chairs, beer/wine, and better food options. It was originally an offshoot of another theater, but the way that one closed shop is a long story. They had lower costs by showing late first run and older movies. I understand the rental costs are less and they could keep more of the gate. They also had quirky things like baby nights, where they turned down the sound, turned up the lights, and nobody complains about crying babies. The one I went to eventually got taken over by a local theater chain.

As for the closed theater, someone managed to reopen with a similar name in a different location.

I'm not much on going to clubs, shows, or sporting events. I like shows, but they can be very expensive. Concerts are just too loud for me, and also expensive. Movies, even with the higher prices, are still a way to get out for an evening, stay close to home, and forget about life for a couple of hours. You just don't get that at home, even with the best home theater setup. It is very affordable for me. When I go to M&E I rarely get much more than a huge bowl of popcorn (same price as the containers in conventional theaters) and a couple of drinks. I've even forgone food completely several times. Just because they serve food doesn't mean you have to order any. YMMV
