Space is big. Really big. And there's software which predicts potential collisions and calculates the optimum time to fire the satellite motors to get out of the way.
Besides which, they're planned to go into orbits which decay fairly quickly if anything bad happens to the satellite. I remember Musk saying recently that they're changing the design of the SpaceX satellites so they'll pretty much entirely burn up when that happens.

There's a lot of FOD up there in addition to tons of satellites. I think it was Russia that tested an anti satellite weapon against one of their own satellites and caused major damage to other satellites from FOD. If there is a malfunction, there is no guarantee that they will enter the atmosphere before they damage anything else.
