Am I crazy

My brother has a Remington 870 with a rifled shotgun barrel he can put on for deer hunting. It is a magnum so it will accept 3" shells. The place he bought it from told him he had to use 3" sabot slugs with his slug barrel. I told him I did not know why he couldn't use 2&3/4 inch slugs if he so desired, and that I didn't understand what the barrel had to do with his reciever that accepts 2& 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells. So they will sell him 2 &3/4 inch shells for bird/rabbit hunting but only 3" magnum sabots for deer hunting. I think they just want him to spend the extra money for the 3" shells. Am I crazy?? 2 & 3/4 should be fine, right? Thanks.

You're not crazy. He could use 2 3/4" inch shells with his barrel. I don't know why he'd want to but he could. He could get more velocity and perhaps a heavier slug with the 3" shell. In short, you can use either 2 3/4" or 3" shells with a "3 inch receiver" but only 2 3/4" shells with a "2 3/4 inch receiver". Clear as mud?

Thanks, that is what I thought. I priced the 3" as opposed to the 2&3/4" not a real huge difference so I concur. He gave me the impression there was a big difference in price, maybe it depends on the store. Thanks.

Yea, that's total ________. You can certainly run 2.75 inch shells in a "magnum" without problems. In fact, if you want to get his attentiom, accuracy test both, the 2.75's should come out better.

To the original question, either can be used. The 3"ers give better velocity and balistics, at the expense of much more punishing recoil. 2 3/4"ers more user friendly, cheaper, but not as effective at longer ranges. Only thing is with slugs thats only the difference of 25 to 50 yards. Testing on paper targets is the only way to determine wich is best for each user and gun.
