Yes, definately a positive, as to the straight 40 at low temps, it will be a balancing of trade-offs to resort to that I think, is the engine so tired that all the clearances have opened up that only a thicker oil will relieve so that you can get more life out of it, or is it still not so bad that the right multi-grade will be sufficient to give optimal lubrication with minimal burning (smoke , consumption) that is what it sounds like you are trying to determine at this point.
