So on one of my Monte Carlo's (87)I installed an electric fan when the fan clutch seized up. I knew my OEM alternator was on its way out before and now its dead. My question is that with just a cd player installed, if the 78 amp alternator is enough, or should I see about bumping up to the 94 amp one? I was told if I get one for a v8 85 Riviera it will bolt right on. Its more pricey and if I can get by with a 78 I would prefer as money is tight. Toughts?

If it's just an aftermarket CD player, you'll be fine. If you've got an amp or two, then step up to the 94.

You should go with the higher rated one. The electric fan draws plenty of power. We put 160 amp alternators on every SUV (GM) with electric fans...the fan clutch SUV (which are only on 3/4 ton) gets the 140 amp one. So, the trucks are all the same except for the cooling fan electric vs manual fan clutch, and the electric fan jobs get 20 more amps. Therefore - you should really get the bigger one - 105amp is a better option yet.

Yeah its just an aftermarket CD player. No amps. Only other electrical draw is a rear defroster, but the car never sees winter so it is never used.

I always ran the 63 amp version on my hot rod stuff and didn't have any problem with electric fans - I had a dual fan Flex-A-Lite Black Magic that drew around 30 amps...

Well Amazon had a temporary lapse in good judgement and I got a new Bosch 78 amp one for my car for 55 bucks and change. I looked back after placing the order and it went up 40 bucks. LOL
