Just a comment. Easiest alternator replacement ever. Remove belt with 1/2 drive breaker bar in tentioner. 3 10mm bolts hold the alternator to the engine. 1 10mm nut for the charging lead, 2 small wiring harnesses. If I had the new parts there when I started, it would have been a 30 minute job. 147k, original belt and alternator. Not bad, Ford.. not bad at all.

The alternator replacement on our '98 Windstar was just as easy as well. The hardest part was getting the belt off!

I miss the days of owning domestics sometimes. I remember my dad changing the alt in our 1988 Caprice wagon. Right up front, at the top. 1/2 hour.

My Civic took me 4 hours. And it would have taken me much longer if I didn't have the factory Helm manual to prevent me from working on it underneath the car instead of through the top.

On my grand marquis the alt mounting tabs were slotted so you just had to loosen the bolts a couple turns and lift the bugger out!

Alt, AC, PS, one of them has to get buried somewhere awful. Every maker has their choice.

The alternator in my 93 Suburban is that way. Up top and up front. I do need a step stool however as I am not 7' tall.

What did you get as a replacement? I try and go local for alternators and get a rebuilt at a local shop. They do a better job than the ones that are rebuilt out of the country. And I always walk away from the shop knowing a little bit more about alternators than when I walked in.
