What the heck is this thing? Never heard of it. Friend gave it to me. Said her husband no longer wanted it. Weighs a Ton! The batteries not charged. Boots in Vista SP1!

Must be some sort of dude-gamer LT machine! Never knew such an animal existed! Dell?? said they don't intend to code any W10 drivers for it. Perhaps I could load W7 on it. Can I use the existing product key?

Anyone out there own one of these? Is it upgradeable?

Dude...this thing is INCREDIBLY HEAVY!
 
I have a M18x laptop. I absolutely love it for a laptop. Not portable at all, but it is great when I don't want to use my desktop. Was able to buy it new last year with Windows 7.
 
Off the top of my head, Alienware made high end computers with crazy cases targeting the gamer. Dell acquired them. I don't know that there is much of a market these days for high end PC gamer machines.

Have fun with it or ebay it if there is a demand for them.
 
Its a desktop replacement laptop gaming system.

few years old.. not obsolete yet... probably worth a couple hundred dollars..
 
Gaming laptops are BARELY now becoming feasible for the casual gamer (read, guys like me, who want something they can keep on their lap or take on travel, that doesn't weigh 9#.) I settled for a little [censored]-box Pentium 3-powered laptop to take part in Counter Strike, Diablo II and WarCraft III LAN parties. I'm not sure I'd be able to settle for anything less than a Haswell i7 and GTX 965M today.

If you want to actually game, get rid of that thing.

If you want something with good battery life, get rid of that thing (if it even still holds a charge.)

If you want something that can be carried anywhere, looks sexy (maybe it did, to someone, at one point way back when,) get rid of that thing.

If you want something cool, quiet and subdued, get rid of that thing.

It's 5-7 years old. I'd trade you my little netbook for it, but wouldn't give you any amount of money for it. So, why did he give it to you and why did you take it?

Wouldn't bother upgrading it. You would be left with just the shell. Not trying to be negative but virtually everything about this PC (compared to modern day gaming) is very low end.

You can game but at 2ghz you will not be doing much. Many games now require a quad core CPU roughly the equvilant of a 3.2 ghz i5 4460.

The GPU is low end for today's standards as well. I would recommend a minimum of R9 280x if you want to play at 1080 with 60fps.

The ram is about half of what's recommend now as well. 8gbs is about what's good for today while some games now recommend 16gbs.

To upgrade you would need to replace the CPU, GPU, PSU and your motherboard.

Just not worth it. Please be aware however that this is for AAA games at high-ultra graphics at 1080 with 45-60 fps.

If your playing Indies hardware requirements will be considerable less.

People will more than likely disagree with me but today's midrange gaming pcs require this kind of hardware and will be outdated in a couple of years.
 
yea its only 2500 cpumark its not going to play witcher 3 or fallout 4 well.

but as a basic computer its fine.. speed is similar to newer i3 laptop which wont game either.

The GPU is high end compared to most older(laptop) graphics.. and great compared with integrated modern intel graphics


The bads, not really portable. wont run well on battery

Still I think you could probably get 200$ for it. I sold a sandybridge b815 laptop for 200$ and it was basic acer.
 
Thanks for the replies, guys. She recalled me asking about any older confusers they were going to get rid of...then forgot until yesterday. I'd since won a Dell auction for an off-lease i3 Optiplex with W70 Pro installed. Still need to transfer all of my data/email/etc. to it from this old Dell Dim 5150 (I think), that I'm typing on.

My LT's are old Dells as well, too slow graphics wise to run astronomy programs. So when she said "not so old LT" I said OK. But this things a TANK!

Running Vista?? Very odd...also surprised with only 4G of RAM for a 64b OS. I can set it up in the kitchen to watch sports on while cooking. Both 17 & 20" PPC iMacs will no longer play sports streams due to needing newer versions of Flash, which won't work with older versions of OS_X.

I'm no gamer, so it won't be used for that. Might give it to my nephew however....I'm sure he'd get a kick out of it and Christmas is coming up soon....
 
I had an M17x lappy scattered all over my bench last year to replace a burned/melted power socket. One of the worst PITA teardowns yet. Fortunately Dell had the service manual online.

Agree with above, it weighs as much as a bag of bricks. Monster power supply to.
 
I'll have to look on closed ebay & CL sales to see what these things are selling for. Any other recommendations to ascertain its value?

I'd be best served with a 15" max anti-glare screen, long battery life, reasonable carrying weight and respectable graphics capabilities to run astronomy SW such as Stellarium & Starry Nights with no issues.
 
Update:

Dwnld'd about 70 Vista updates, including SP 2, last night and after some trouble, installed. Also dwnld'd the "alien" control panel to change the color of the keyboard lights and dim then. Way too BRIGHT.

Read up on smart LT battery systems and now understand how they work better. The included battery may be fine, just not "enabled", as it's not even recognized, much less charging. Seems quite a few of these have had this issue according to the Dell threads.
