Air filter on a 07 Focus

Why don't more engine builders use these? It would appear this type of filter is almost idiot proof.


$$$$ It is and was too expensive. Never mind that it worked WELL and folks did not have to deal with it unless they live in a area (like here) where it would fill up around 60-100k it was the $400 air filter from Ford that killed it.

Prob weight had a concern too. But I'd bet cost was the factor.

This EXACTLY. They are NOT inexpensive. And not replacing the filter means lost revenue at the parts counter.

The similar filter in one of my work trucks 2004 6.0 Powerstroke lasted for 50k miles in VERY dusty conditions. One day it started rough and wouldnt go above .5 mph. Changed filter, all is good.

Cost. First to build the car and then second when you don't go to the dealer to buy new air filters every 15k miles.

did they build all the focus's (foci?) with this air filter up until they came out with the 2012's? My dad bought a low mileage 2010 Focus in september and unfortunately passed away this past november and my mom had decided to get rid of her car and keep his, so I'll be in charge of maintaining it from now on. I'll have to take a look at it and see. It would be nice if it does, that would be one less maintnance cost she has.

Looks like the '10 Focus has a filter you can go down to any auto shop and buy for $10 or so.

You usually saw these filters on the PZEV equipped vehicles. This had something to do with the increased warranty requirements, or so I have been told.

Sorry for not posting back earlier, but the only ones I have sold were for vehicle accidents where that filter was damaged, same with hybrid batteries.

According to the PDF its a multi layer foam filter, not a donaldson powercore.

I'm not sure why we don't see more of those two types of filters in use in vehicles though. Ever since I started wrenching on vehicles Ive met countless owners who have no clue the air filter needs changed. Many witch were way past due. I'm all in favor of longer life filter for those types of people. Most of them knew enough to have the oil changed on regular basis but not the air filter.

I believe the 07 was the last year for this filter.

Yup, seeing the same thing. I read on here that it was a Donaldson, guess whoever originally stated that was wrong, making me wrong as well.

It is made up of "blocks" of foam, separated by plastic, and quite thick.

Whoops. I apologize for my part in this error. I myself had seen that info repeated somewhere as well and was going off of memory. Normally I double check before I post anything but I had skipped that.

Just for giggles I looked this filter up and it shows on a backorder until 02 April 2012. What made me look is a customer came in with a newer Focus that took this filter and their body shop installed a junkyard one in their 2009 Focus stating that OEM wasn't available, customer wanted to check to see if it was true.

What is really sad here is that they consider a vehicle with 150K miles as its lifespan...

Honestly it makes perfect sense. They are in the business of making new cars.

I see a lot of cars with 150k that are way ready to be crushed. Many people just dont take care of their stuff.

Well, my 2006 has 44,000 miles. In 20 years of total use she should have approx. 150,000 miles. If I had to change or jury rig a filter by then, I wont complain.
