Air filter for Yard Machines

I have a Yard Machines 4 hp lawn mower. It has a kind of foam like air filter. When it got dirty I just washed it with detergent and carefully let it dry out and removed all the water. Is there a better way to clean it? Apparently, it is designed to be cleaned and not replaced.

I use 30 wt. oil in it from Sears. Is there a better oil to use?

Oil meant for a foam filter would be better. It is tackier and adheres to the filter and dirt better. You can find foam filter oil at any motorcycle shop. In a pinch though, gear oil does work resonably well.

Mystic, I think that's the way to do it. I wash my foam elements out in a 5 gallon pail filled with 4"-6" of water. For a cleaner I haven't found anything better than Simple Green.

Clean it until the water runs clear out of it ... and then consider cleaning it (and especially rinsing it) one more time.

For oiling, I use chainsaw chain & bar lube in the foam because it has extra tack additive.
