Air filter at 40k miles vs new Honda OEM.

This a Bosch Workshop AF off a Honda 3.0L run ~7 years. As the companion linked thread below shows, this install a bit challenging but completed. I hope this one a 'little more' acceptable to the critics of my last 30k mi/5year interval anecdote.😀

Keep it <30k or less my friend. Our air filtration systems don't have a bypass valve when they get this dirty. :D
 
That's the Honda OEM. Blue on the filtering side, yellow-ish on the other, not shown.
How many miles on the dirty filter? Duh, its in the thread title, guess I need more coffee.

I know my engine filters look way more filthy than that after 25k in the Mazda 2.5L but also there's always all kinds of nasty crap in the air in the STL area. 40k doesn't really seem excessive from what I can see, but this is BITOG after all. :LOL:

Fwiw, I don't disagree with your conclusion. Really, without a Filterminder/restriction gauge on the air box, maxing out the AF interval all guess work. If one wants to go that route, should get one and install it. Opening the box to check it often not really ideal for the filter seals. And in the topic application, not practical at all. As comparison, my 35k mile interval linked 'looks' worse than this one, imo. And unlike oil filters, AF do become more efficient with use, up to a point of course.

First of all the filter here doesn’t look very dirty at all. I would not even be close to changing it if mine looked like that. And secondly, if the engine is running smoothly and the fuel economy hasn’t dropped then why change the air filter? The dirtier it gets the better it filters. So leave it be.
 
Yup.
Twice, recently, I've inspected air filters at 48k miles (numeric coincidence). They were packed and dropping sand upon removal.
That surprised me as I'd assume sand would be heavy and simply not make it up to the filters' "dirty sides".

My new ride's records state both engine and cabin air filters changed 10k ago.
However, operation near a Shore has me considering "inspecting" both.
The CAF would be changed regardless of condition due to "D & EPIP"-a new cautionary flag which stands for Difficulty & Embrittled Plastic Interior Parts.
 
I simplified the air filter experience and just buy Denso filters from Rock Auto for my Toyota and both of my Hondas. Denso is the OEM for my Camry, so that is good enough for me to slap in my Civic and Pilot rather than track down and pay for whoever makes their OEM filters. Denso filters have a three layer filter element, are around $10 (for now), and at 30k intervals (it's not dusty in Maryland) I have no complaints.
