Is it OK to run an oil-less air compressor outside in the cold weather (0-30 degrees)? I have been using it in the garage lately and it seems like its making some strange noises…could be my imagination. Any thoughts?

No different than an engine if the compressor is running a lot and maintaining some warmth or running at a good duty cycle.

If it is very sporadic, then IMO the thermal cycling isnt the best for it, so youre better off inside.

That said, Ill bet there are lots of really old cast iron compressors parked outside in industrial and auto repair facilities that just run and run...

Our oiled air compressor will trip breakers if you try using it in the middle of winter. I suspect that means it's not happy. While I am sure they can "take it", I doubt it's best practice.

probably because the oil gets REALLLY thick and it wont start?

they usually recommend straight 30wt non detergent

That's what I'm thinking.

For the record this is not the Sears unit that's on its way out.
