Buddy of mine bought a power trowel he's rebuilding. He says the specs call for AGMA 5EP fluid. When we search for this we see high pressure gear oils that come up with ISO 220 but don't mention the AGMA, one example is Lucas 10590 this is affordable.

PDF attached for specs too, but it makes no mention of AGMA classifications anywhere but does state ASTM ratings.

Can we get an education on this as they the Lucas looks to be $100 for 5 gal and he said when he sees AGMA is 10x that cost.

AGMA is extremely uncommon nomenclature anymore. It’s just not used much since ISO came around. As it predates ISO standards.

You just need an EP 220 industrial gear oil. Any lubricants distributor should have one. Either branded or house brand.

Chevron Meropa 220
P66 Extra Duty 220
Mobil Gear 600 Xp 220 (or Spartan 220 is a bit cheaper, no micro pitting.)
Citgo EP Gear Compound 220
Shell Omala S2 GX 220

And several house brands.

Thank you very helpful.

I included the spec sheet for the Lucas 220 above. I see no mention of "EP". Since the other poster said "it's just gear oil" can you speak to the Lucas product? It's local and affordable for him but I don't want him getting it until I clarify the EP rating. I'll have look for the options you gave too but the google machine hasn't found it listed locally, yet.

DM me the zip code and I can link some distributors. But every lubricants brand has a distributor finder as well. So if you go to Chevron lubricants, citgo, p66, etc. website. They will have a distributor finder.

Other wise, yes. The product you linked from Lucas is an industrial gear oil. So, by that it should be an EP product. Just in typical Lucas fashion, they don’t say much compared to others.

Where as, this is the Chevron Meropa Product data sheet: https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/PDSDetailPage.aspx?docDataId=323775&docFormat=PDF

Clearly lists all its approvals, more specifications including clearly its AGMA rating.

But either way, it should be fine. However if you want to avoid shipping and find something local. There’s alot of oil distributors around.

That's funny on Lucas. I actually thought when I saw that data sheet (I work in IT) that it was very generic specs. I'm used to pretty nerded out spec sheets from hardware to MSDS. Glad to know their sophomoric marketing team has their fingers in everything!

I got him some names in his area (I'm in a different area) of local guys for supply from the list you provided.

Again, thanks for all your help. He bombs me out of the blue todo his deep dives once he gets conflicting information on the internet. I had a hunch that ISO 220 (EP) and the AGMA were the same and once you pointed out the later is antiquated, I knew we could find the right stuff. It's old equipment and he was lucky to have the manual still.

This reminds me of years ago when we had to fix the steering on his boat and the actual specs on the hydro fluid we needed was all aviation related. Not one local boat guy had the fluid we needed and I had to go to the local regional airport for him to buy some $100 a gallon fluid. At the end of the day I think the spec was antiquated and he just needed generic 101 "something red" fluid that's in 80% off all non-cable boats.

Lucas is badly written notes its AGMA and EP in the text AND would be ok to use but yeah poorly written tech sheet.
