Much of the finance industry is in a sales mode with aggressive sales targets given to many of their employees. They need to hit the targets to "meet expectations". Those that do not meet those expectations after a while will be shown the door, and replaced by a new eager beaver who will try to make his or her mark by meeting those expectations. It is a dog eat dog world out there.

My wife is a part-time teller at a major bank in our area. I can confirm much of what you just said. It is REALLY sad because they are chasing away their good customers by constantly pestering them (even calling them at home) for CC, loans, opening additional new accounts, wanting them to "meet" with the investment guy/gal, etc. Actual customer service and doing what is best for the customer (and ultimately the bank as well) is out the window. It is short-term results all the way. And if just one of the "team members" don't meet their preassigned targets, NOBODY gets their quarterly bonus (which is ridiculously small anyway). That's retail banking today.

I kept getting approved for way more mortgage than I wanted or needed.

Yeah I'm sure I can afford a $90,000 mortgage ... but I don't want to.

I'd love to "only" have a $90,000 mortgage...

I think that would but a cardboard box to sleep in on the sidewalk here.

As for bank upsells, the tellers at BofA think I am weird because I shredded my ATM card. When I signed up for the account I told them I didn't want one, but they made me wait while they made one, I think cracked it in half as soon as they gave it to me and made them shred what was left.

How is this allowed? The Bank must appear solvent. That is why they must have the fancy buildings.

It is a place you SHOULD FEEL is safe, and a good place for your assets.

When a teller starts hawking some lame [censored], that may be okay to non account holders, but totally unacceptable to those who hold accounts.

.... Is this a Bank or a Pawn shop?

Big deal if they try to sell you something. Say "no" if you're not interested and move on. Then people complain when they didn't know about a certain bank product that could benefit them. Not all bank products are incur debt. If you have a legitimate complaint about the bank complain to the OCC about it.

No. I don't want my bank pestering me constantly. I dont want people at my door pestering me. I dont want people pestering me. Period. I am highly annoyed when you go to certain retailers and every time you check out, they ask if I want to sign up for a store credit card. No. No, I don't. And as a matter of principle, I will go down the street to your competition, and make more purchases there.

As to the topic at hand, I do have several credit cards with Chase/Bank of America and others. These two companies are notorious for sell, sell sell!! Last time they called, I told them in no uncertain terms, that I was to be removed from any and all marketing list. If I received even one more unsolicited call from them, I would cut up my cards and close my account. Has worked so far. Knock on wood.

The loan shark hiding in the shadows of that back alley is more honest than most big banks, but his collection methods may hurt a little

Funny, I have one of the biggies (along with my credit union) and never have any issues with crazy upselling. Once in a while they might offer something, but a simple no and that's it.....

Now you want annoying, never call Quicken Loans for something. It took nearly 6 months for them to leave me alone...

Well, I guess it has to be me with credit union stories that aren't exactly stellar...there's always one.

Or in this case two. First one was the "Shared Branch" Co-op concept. Credit union from a former employer kept pushing the fact that they were part of the "Shared Branch" system where I could go to a credit union near my house (where I was not a member) and transact business with them through the co-op. Omitted a tiny fact that there was a $1 charge for the privilege. Now, $1 is not going to break me, but I seem to recall Bank of America being lambasted for wanting to charge $12 a year for an ATM card (i.e., $1/month) on certain accounts to allow access anywhere. Hmm...

Item #2, received a letter from one of my local credit unions stating that they noticed that all I had with them was a savings account (which, BTW, I regularly deposited into and had a pretty decent chunk of cash parked there) and saying that if I didn't want to open a checking account or a mortgage or some other loan product with them, they wouldn't bee too upset if I took my business elsewhere. In all of my dealings with the evil big banks, I never received a letter like that, and I'd had much smaller amounts on deposit with them.

We a local credit union called service credit union that is quite good. I am eligible due to being a local but apparently it serves the entire military.

I went in my bank to talk to a banker about my accounts and the banker started asking me probing questions about my living situation. When they found out I rent but was considering a home purchase they told me to "put as little down as possible and don't put a large down payment from your accounts." They were giving me advice to take out a larger mortgage so they could milk more interest out of the life of the mortgage.
