AFE Pro-Guard 7

Anyone tried AFE's new Pro-Guard 7 yet? Supposed to be a combo filter -- five layers of gauze & two layers of dense-packed synthetic fiber. I've looked at one -- hold it up to the sun, and there are no pinholes. Fiber facing out, gauze inside. The gauze looks, well, varnished in some sort of very tacky yellow substance.

AFE claims it meets manufacturers' filtration standards and yet approaches oiled gauze filter flow.

Wondered if anyone who has it would share his/her impressions.

The technology looks like a stride forward if it does what is claimed. But they want an arm and a leg for one of those filters! $200 for an air filter?

I think the $200 price may be for a complete cold air system with the filter. The price I've been quoted for a cone-shaped filter alone (fit an '02 Dodge 3500 Cummins diesel) is $92 -- near double a K&N and about the same price as a Fleetguard BHAF.

Any more info on these? I would like an AFE intake for my Duramax but regular old K&N gime the willies. These any better? I ahve been thinking of either a foam cone on an AFE intake but then that adds to the cost. If the "new" better filtering filter actually filters good then I might have to get one.

Yes I know there is going to be no gains in HP over my factory unit and just a slightly lower spool up time. Performance isnt my goal though.....I want more whistle with good filtering ability. I know 200$ for more noise

I priced a cone on their site. They want $65, or about 2x the equivilant K&N product.

Hmmmm... maybe that is for a regular cotton gauze filter? Anyone know if these are oiled?

Looks like it has a lot more and varied layers than a K&N. Might be a lot better from the filtration side of things.

I use this filter on 2 Ford PSD diesels, plenty of air flow, and the filter is water resistant. Donaldson, $23 each.

Vetteman... do you have dimensions for that filter? I need something 6" in diameter, 9" long, with a 3.5" inlet.

AFE uses the blue colored oil for their Standard AFE filter, very similar to the K&N. In the new Pro Guard 7, which has the 7 layers, they use the Gold oil. But either color oil can be used on either the Standard or the Pro7. One is dyed blue, the other Gold.

This filter is 13"long, 9"wide and has a 4"outlet. Go to the Donaldson site and you may find a smaller filter that you are looking for. You can use a 4"to 3-1/2" pvc reducer if you can find the correct length and width filter.
