The only tools in my box that are prone to rust are the black oxide coated impact sockets and extensions. What aerosol spray will prevent rust but not leave a sticky residue 3-4 years from now? I use these tools infrequently.

Eezox or ballistol from the gun store.

Or just take a slightly oily rag and wipe them down - that's how they came from the factory.

I use Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor Paper in my tool box at home.
Works well in the high humidity/temp swings we have in north central Texas. I just drape the paper over the tools.

3-4 years is a tall order...without some kind of coating that will turn sticky. VCI Paper can be changed out every year or two to meet your needs.

Boeshield T-9

+1 on trying Boeshield. Its good stuff and Boeing first developed it, thus the name.

But it may be "too" much of a coating for the sockets. Try it on one.

I spray it around my boat engine during winterizing.

Love boeshield but have found a rag soaked with fluid film a better bang for the buck to keep my garage tools wiped down. Just follow with a quick dry wipe.

I was asking about an aerosol can because I think it does a better job of coverage on the inside of the socket than a rag can. I was thinking of placing all my impact sockets in a metal tub, and then spray them, let the excess drain away, and put the sockets back into the tool box.

Good point.

though a more oily rag in there wouldnt scare me, since it would be primarily retained in a pooling inside.

Aerosol in there should be good. All the products mentioned have an aerosol or spray bottle variant.

Gun oil is a good idea. In another thread here, I came across this test of 46 products for corrosion protection:
http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667

The top 3 rust inhibitors in this comprehensive test were:

WD40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor
Frog Lube CLP
Hornady One Shot Extreme Gun Cleaner

The WD40 leaves a sticky residue. The bio-based Frog Lube does not, but it is very expensive. So I have decided to buy some of the Hornady One Shot and give it a try. It is a bit less expensive than the Frog Lube (but still no bargain) and does not leave a sticky residue.
