Advance Auto Parts Total Grip VS. Fram Extra Guard

I cut open a Fram Tough Guard yesterday. Yep, no surprises. Some sort of fiber board end caps on the filter. The filter media itself looked fine.

I'm tempted to take advantage of the Advance special on their house filters, just to cut one open. If I like what I see, then I'll use the other one. If I'm not particularly impressed, then I'll put the other one on my Dad's truck.

Another one that I may cut open would be the NAPA Pro Select. These are $2.69 for my Silverado and the Sierra.

I bought an AA5 for my Chevy truck and compared it to a Quaker State,Purolator PP, and a Napa Gold. The base plate and the way it was crimped was identical to the QS and PP, but the the holes in the center tube on the AA5 were larger than either QS or PP, which were both the same. I checked the Napa Gold and the center tube looked identical to the AA5 but the base plates were totally different.What does this mean? I have no idea. The AA filter almost looks like a hybrid between the two designs(PP and Napa Gold).

Would you guys run one of these AAP filters for a 5000 mile OCI??

Sure, I've been running them for 3 years now on my 5.3L using the OLM (which usually turns out to be about 6000 miles). Great filter and I usually stock up with them when they are 2for1 for all my autos. You just can't beat'em for a $1.44 each.

Boxes at my local AAP said made by FRAM. I cringed. Looked up at Purolator and down at Motorcraft and I felt better.

If made by Purolator, I'm heading to Advance though my oil change isn't due till April on both cars.

No, they say "Compare to Fram".

Big difference there. Comparing somthing good to something that is the the biggest piece of junk sold today is easy.

Sure; The AA2870A on my VW 1.8T will be run for at least 5000 miles.

I bought the filter after seeing "this is not manufactured..." Right now they are in storage shelf since won't be needed until April like I said. I don't plan on driving 3,000 miles in the snow. Work then home and that's it. Well, maybe to rent a movie when I can and it's not too bad out.

AA filters are made by Purolator, but not the exact same as them. See This Post.

Although when I just bought the AA filter to cut opem, the counter guy said "You know these are made by Fram". I just mumbled yea and left. Didn't feel like trying to educate him.

I read on a website devoted to oil filters, that the AA filters were indeed made by Purolator, but did contain less media, a sort of economy purolator. That is why they are cheaper, I guess. I have used them without any problems.

I would have shown him the side of the box that says "Not made by Honeywell/Fram".

Well, I ended up getting the WIX NAPA gold for $3.42 from the sponsor www.fleetfilter.com and am happy because I got a really quality filter which I think is better than the FramTG, AAP, and AC Delco that is spec'ed for my truck. The Delco's are $4.18 at AZ here so what the heck. If I were you guys I would definitely check out fleetfilter. If you order bulk quantity the shipping is cheaper than tax.

That would have required him to make the effort of reading it... How many of those filters has he stocked on the shelf... but has never noticed that... ????

They think just because the AAP filters have the anti-slip coating they are made by Fram.

Hmmm. I might just have to get down to AA and pick up a couple of these for the passat.

Well, let's hope the AA is OK....using my fiance's 2001 Honda Civic with 106k miles as a guinea pig... AA filter and supertech 5W-30 dino oil for 4k miles and then getting an analysis by blackstone labs.

Then I'm doing the same with Q-power 5W-30 and MC filter for my 2001 Ford F150 Screw with a 5.4L.
