Anyone know who makes them?
dunno.gif
Just wondering as they are $2.34 for 2 of them right now.

Most of the speculation is Purolator. The 2 for $2.34 may be an attempt to break us of our ST habit. Stopped by my Advance Auto the other day and the only thing they had for my car or truck was orange. Left empty handed.

I am suspecious of of them, but figure a couple of them couldn't be worse than the years of 6 month OCI's and Frams.

The advance auto totalgrip filters are purolators painted with red grip paint. I have an advance auto totalgrip AA3600 right next to a purolator L20195 and they are exactly the same except the paint

So take advantage of the buy 1 get 1 free sale and stock up while you can!

Morning Ironduke4,
Have you cut one of the Advance filters up to compare the amount of media inside? They are obviously made by purolator, I'm just wondering if they have done what Champ did with the ST filters. The Walmart ST filters are identical to the Champ AC filter equivalent with the exception that they use less media. The AC pf52 equivalent had 244 sq. in. and the ST equivalent had 206,210, and 225 in the examples I cut up. I usually cut them up after I use them (the purolator premium plus that I used had 247, and the Pure-one had 236. No testing of the media, (excellent test by BITOG guys) I just measured the area of the size that I use..

Someone just bought one and it said made by Honeywell (peopel that own the name Fram)

So has anyone opend one yet? Pics?

Says NOT made by Honeywell, but on the front of the box says "compare to Fram" I think they are just referencing the application number for comparison (and trying to take away Fram users..). They are definitely made by purolator though.
Marlin, you an x- telecom guy (maybe still there)? Used to work in TAS?- RTP?

I have used the ADV Total Grip filters and would have no problem with using them again.

I cut open the PF-47,3387A version of this filter.

It was very well constructed and had quite a bit of filter material. The pleats were well aligned and glued well with metal endcaps.

They seem to be a very good filter,I would say that they are a very good choice.

If you go into an Advance, ask for the Powerflo filter. It is the same exact filter as a Purolater premium Plus filter, except they market it for jobbers. I currently pay $1.48 each for them. I have been using them for years and have had no problems at all with them.

Just an update,

A few months ago I installed the first Advance Auto filter that I bought, well now I just changed oil and cut it up..
The purolator prem-plus equivalent that I used before had 66 pleats giving an area of 247 sq in., this AA filter had 53 pleats for an area of 199 sq in. That shows about a 20% reduction. The length and pleat depth dimensions were the same for both filters.
Both filters had a string around the cartridge, The purolator had metal endcaps that fully enclosed the ends of the pleats, the AA filter had flat endcaps that had thick glue that sealed the ends of the pleats but did not curve up around the ends like the purolator metal caps did. The AA filter endcaps were not metal, and were not the same fiber material as the new e-cores, and also were not the same cardboard as the Frams either. Best I could tell it was still a fibrous material but very stiff...all the pleats were secured well and no gaps/rips/defects, spacing was not perfect, but close.
My personal verdict- easily worth the price when they were half price. At full price though I would buy the regular purolator (I don't know, they may not be using metal caps anymore either- I'll see next time I get one I reckon.). These should be fine for 3k intervals, probably more But I've always done 3k OCIs anyway.

There ya go, they are obviously purolators, but NOT exactly the same as the Premium-plus..at least as far as number of pleats anyway...20% difference.

Excellent info! At least in my area you can get the Purolators for $2.50 with a coupon, so they're the same price as the AA filters.

Just bringing this to the top...
AA3980 discussion continues....not all AA filters being built the same, but still look like purolator, but with endcap differences.

On the left is a Total grip L10111/PF-47/3387 equivelent, the shorter version of the 3980. On the right is a MAX-life filter, same application.

Both were purchased about a month ago.
