Is the Red Advance Auto Parts Oil Filter a rebadged Purolator? They are 1.50 less than the L14610 Purolator and look exactly the same. Same base plate and adv. It says compare to Fram on the box but looks like the puro.

I believe it's made by Purolator, but I'm sure it's not exactly the same. Usually they change the media. How much do they cost? I usally get my Purolators(L10011 and L10085) for $2.50-$3.50.

I'm not sure if Advance sells more than one type of oil filter, but as far as I know, it's a re-badged Fram filter.

I'm not sure how much your Purolator filters are, but I pay $2.88 for Premium Plus or $5.88 for PureOne. If you want to get a cheaper Premium Plus filter, try the new Quaker State filters (white ones).

The Advance Auto Total Grip filter for my 2003 Pathfinder is indeed a re-badged Purolator Premium Plus. I have no way of knowing for sure if the media is identical but strictly going on appearances (cut open both) they are the same.

I hope to have pics up this weekend.

The totalgrip filter says on the box:

"This product is not manufactured or distributed by Honeywell International Inc., owner of the registered trademark Fram".

The TotalGrip oil filters are made by Arvin-Meritor,the parent company of Purolator, which really makes them a Purolator filter.I have used the TotalGrip filter,it seemed to do fine.I also cut it open after use,it looked like it was constructed very well.If you compare the base plates on the filters, you can see that they are the same.Fram filters have a different look than the TotalGrip/Purolator.
I think what is confusing people about the TotalGrips is the numbering system used.It is the same as Fram and this makes people think that they are made by Fram.
When it comes to Advance, some of the workers know very little if anything about the stores products.
For example, just recently, one guy tried to tell my brother that Advance Motor oil is made by Havoline. This is completely false, the oil bottle even states that it's not made by Havoline or Chevron.
It is actually made by Warren-Unilube(used to be Coastal Unilube). This Warren www.warrenunilube.com
is not the SuperTech maker. When it comes to some of the workers at Advance, you have to take what they say with a grain of salt.
The price for the TotalGrip in my area is $2.48 and the Purolator is $2.88,a .40 cent dif.I have a Purolator, same application, that I will try to cut open for comparison.
It would seem that for a 40 cent dif that the TotalGrip and the Purolator would be the same filter.

Does Advance only sell one type of oil filter, or do they have two grades, like Napa has Silver and Gold?

In any case, if it's only $0.40 less, then I'd consider getting one of the new Quaker State oil filters (white ones). I can get them at Menards for about $2.10.

Once I am out of the Motorcraft filters, I am going to use the Totalgrip filter for my Mustang 5.0 because the Motorcraft filter doesn't have a silicone anti-drainback valve, and the Grease Oil Filter study shows that the Motorcraft filter's media is definitely not the PureOne media that it was rumoured to be for the longest time.

I'll continue to use either the Motorcraft filter or the Purolator PureOne for the Contour 2.5 because that one has a silicone anti-drainback valve.

The Advance TotalGrip filter comes in only one grade. In appearance it is identical to the Purolator Premium Plus.Purolator has a very good reputation,it appears that Advance and Purolator are trying to cash in on this with the TotalGrip filter.
The filter base plates are identical and I would think that the filter elements are the same also.
As I said in my other post,I have cut one of the TotalGrips open.
The filter I have is the 3387AA(PF-47 equiv.).),however,it IS NOT a Fram nor is it made by Fram, Honeywell or Allied Signal.
The TotalGrip I cut open was constructed very well with metal endcaps, quite a bit of filter element and was glued very well. The element was spaced well and seemed to be strong and of good quality. The ADV seemed to still be in very good shape.
Considering that Advance has Purolator as their main filter product,it would only make sense that the TotalGrips are re-badged Premium Plus filters, not a cheaper version of such

The Advance Auto Total Grip filter does not have a silicone anti-drainback either. And at best the Filter media is Purolator's Premium plus. Plus the bypass valve is in the closed end. Whereas the Motorcraft's is a spring in the open end, a better and more expensive arrangement. If you can still get the FL1A's at Walmart for $2.97 then I'd spring for the Motorcraft instead. Though Walmart's selection of Motorcraft filters keeps shrinking

. They didn't have the common FL820S, but they had plenty of FL1A's and FL300's

, when I went the other week so I had to go to Advance Auto and get it there. They charged $3.98. And they only had 1 left. In fact their selection of Motorcraft or AC Delco filters is pretty sparse also

. Mostly Purolator, Fram and their Total Grip's.

I meant red. The model numbers for my civic matched frams with the exception of the first 2 letters.

The numbering system on the TotalGrip filters have nothing to do with who manufactures them.It is easier to use a system similar to the Fram sytem than to come up with a seperate one.The SuperTech filters use a very similar sysem to Frams as well but they are made by Champion Labs.
Go to ADV and compare a TotalGrip it to a Purolator,I believe that you will see that they are identical in looks and design, minus the color.

I suspect that the Advance Auto Parts oil filter is not exactly a rebadged Purolator Premium Plus filter. They differ in multi-pass efficiency: for the Totalgrip AA4967 it is 94%, while for the corresponding Purolator Premium Plus it is 96% (according to the filter boxes). However, there is no doubt in my mind that they are made by the same company.

I don't see where they are the same either. The TotalGrip 3593 that is supposed to fit Hondas does not look anything like the Purolator 14459 - the base plate is convex instead of concave (does this thing really fit?) and the can diameter is the same as the sealing ring, whereas the Purolator sticks out from the seal about 1/4" (1/2" total diameter difference)
