I posted this in another forum, but I did not buy from AAP for about 10 years due to a bad experience at the local store, but this summer with the rebates, they've won my business back. KEEP IT UP AAP!

They "get" that I want to look up a price online. NAPA makes it convoluted, due to their franchisee setup. Then the local NAPA manager can charge more if he feels like it.

AA will also let me order something, forward the email to my wife, and have her pick it up if it's more convenient. So I don't have to send her to the store with my engine, VIN code, passenger side, not the cheap brakes, the midline ones, oh wait you're out, what should I do?

I knew when list price for my brake rotor went from $16 to $36 in six years it wasn't all metals, exchange rates, and shipping. Some of it's gravy for the store.

Their coupons have us drooling like goofy idiots and they're counting on loyalty to occasionally really stick it to the shopper. A liftgate strut for my volvo was $16 shipped from RA and $36 or something pre-coupon at AA.

I don't know how they're profiting when I'm buying Mobil 1 Extended Performance @ 3.99 a quart and Mobil 1 oil filters @ $6 each. I figured they had to be loosing money when they are practically giving the stuff away.

Their biggest discount is about 40% off, but their mark-up is probably close to 100%. So they are still making profit, but more importantly they are putting the hurt on their competition.

Autozone does have a few online purchase discount codes:

AZ does not seem to have as good of a bargain on some of their codes though and they don't publish them or email them to me the way Advance does. I don't think the AZ website allows the use of PayPal either. I like the AAP discounts but I do not like putting my bank card info out there online for every purchase. I like to use PayPal when I buy online.

What I really like is when I can compare an AZ part to the same part from AAP, research it and find out they are identical, buy the part with an online discount code and save a lot more on it from Advance. I have bought some parts at AZ, when it was more convenient, AAP did not carry the brand or manufacturer I wanted, or the AZ part was better quality, a better price or there was no applicable discount code for the AAP part. I do like the AZ Rewards Card but I sure hope AAP keeps up with the online discounts. They have saved me a lot of money.

mail order business (that advance do) have very low cost due to little to no labor and real estate need, and almost no inventory cost on top of the existing distribution channel. So the profit margin after a 40% off coupon (still expensive compare to other warehouse store like rockauto) is still very high.
