I'm using the Mobil 1 302(I think) oil filter on my 95 Mustang Gt. The normal capacity is 5 quarts for the 5.0 liter engine. I believe that the mobil 1 filter is a little larger than the other brand of filters out there for this engine. My question is should I use more oil due to the larger filter and how can I find out how much more volume there really is? I understand that I can check the dipstick, but I was wondering if anybody has any other bright ideas!

Oil level, not "sump capacity" (whatever that is) counts. If the oil level on the stupid-old, non-scientific, imprecise dipstick is significantly below the full line or dot when checking the oil warm after the engine has been shut off several minutes, adjust it by pouring more oil in until it is. Whether you consider this common sense approach a "bright idea" is up to you.
There's always the drill a vertical line of holes in the oil pan to see what the oil level is.
Why not a sight glass???
I used to think running an oversize filter to increase the overall oil capacity was a good idea until I tried it on my Chrysler. Using a ST8A instead of the (correct) ST16 almost always resulted in some start up rattle from the lifters and or main bearings. Never happens with the correct size filter.
This is about comparing the M1 301 to a Ph8A or a Fl-1A. The 301 is the filter that mobil 1 calls for with this application but in comparison to the other two it is larger. I'm trying to figure out how much bigger the 301 really is. The volume of the 301 is 888ml and I have no idea what the other volumes are!!!
Patronizing me(XS 650) is fun yes, but lets leave the Smart A$$ comments for my wife! LOL
Calculate the volume of the filters of interest by measuring the outside diameter and length and find the difference in volume. Metal thickness, corner radii etc will be close enough that if you take the difference between your calculated volumes for the various filters, it will tell you how much extra oil to add.
Its 57.75 cubic inches/qt.

I think that any differences won't be perceived at the dipstick. This filter is M1's FL1A equivalent. They may vary from man to man ..but it's probably so close in volume that no one will notice.
A graduated cylinder for filling both the standard and M1 would give you the data you seek.
