Someone else should comment on this since I'm not that familiar with Honda UOA's, but it does look like you could go 6K miles. I'd like to know where all the copper comes from in these engines...

Since there is no tin, I think the copper in these engines is a copper oxide layer sluffing off from the core of the oil cooler ....

These results are fine, but I don't like to go below 4.0 on TBN, in order to keep deposits to a minimum ....Yeah, I know what Blackstone uses as a lower limit on TBN, I simply disagree with their logic. The goal should be long and trouble free engine life, not maximum oil I always try to change Amsoil when the TBN drops to 4.0, if that is the limiting factor ....

Good report. Tells you that your vehicle is operating well-especially for the stop and go milage which it sees. Hopefully you will see the coper dropping as time goes on.

I would go further on the drain interval-simply bc I don't like changing oil. I don't have the experience to know if changing when the TBN is less than 4 will effect the life of your car. It might but do you care if the engine lasts 200K miles instead of 300K?? (just an example)

Anyway

Its great to see new members post a UOA for their first post.

Thanks for the observations & input, everyone.

PaJohn, I did see your earlier UOA and was surprised by the wear metals (as was everyone else). It'll be interesting to see your next go-
round.

Questions:

- why are you running 0w30? The '02 calls for 5w30 (the 0w20/5w20 - can't remember which it is, since mine's an 01 - in the manual was a misprint and the filler cap is accurate...Acura had a bulletin on this).

- are you on the AcuraMDX site?

(lurk mode off...I've enjoyed learning so much from everyone's posts)

01 AcuraMDX, 3.5L engine. ~5k on M1 5w30, ~19k on the car. -0- make up oil this interval. Honda OEM filter.

This is an around-town soccermom mobile. Many short trips and stop-n-go. 95% city miles, 5% highway. I've followed the severe-service schedule as a result (usually by mileage, sometimes by time...the car only sees 6k/yr or so. This OCI of 5k miles was about 10 months).

Decided to do my first UOA to see if I might be able to extend the "severe service" OCI from the usual 3750 by using M1.

Since this is my first UOA ever, I'd appreciate some perspective

I think this looks AOK for 5k service under those driving conditions. Thoughts or recommendations?

Worm, I knew about the oil weight controversy but I wasn't aware Acura actually resolved it. Here I thought I was running too thick an oil using the M1 0W30. ****, I just bought some Pennzoil 5W20 to try too. Hmmm, well I'm not going to buy more oil, I have too much on hand now (thanks to reading this forum too much

. I'll have to decide between GC 0W30 or Amsoil 0W30.

No, I haven't been on the AcuraMDX forum in quite a while. The MDX is the wife's car, I spend all my time on Audiworld

Thanks for the info. I'll post the UOA on the M1 in a couple of weeks.
