Anyone here mixing Acetone in with their gasoline? I heard of this on another web site, and thought that is the kind of thing the BITOG'ers might do..

Nope, not a myth at all; there's apparantly a bandwagon of people that are doing it, surprisingly with GREAT results......check gasbuddy.com forums, ecomodders, etc....almost EVERY car forum will have a forum regarding acetone in the fuel LOL.

I have not tried it personally...BUT, I have used products that THEMSELVES contain Acetone...product being Berryman's B-12 CHEMTOOL. Contains a whole witches brew of "High Energy Solvents" including Methanol, Xylenes, Toluene, IPA, and some others....

Suposidely the acetone splits apart the atoms of the fuel to make it "burn better" and thus giving you a better MPG or some such..there's a "wiki" site that started it all somewhere, with real actual "results" and user testimonials regarding acetone in the fuel, what kind of ratio they used....etc. If I recall, back when I did the research it was about 1 oz. per 5 gallons or some such.....

But from my experience with Berryman's B-12 CHEMTOOL, it calls for 1 oz. per gallon of fuel, 1 16 oz. can will treat up to 30 gallons of fuel though....but they say for cars with less than 10 gallon capacity, to add 1 oz. per gallon of fuel.

I did notice a tad increase in performance "in the seat of the pants" lol....likely due to the fact that the solvents make the fuel burn hotter, and thus cleaner....the CHEMTOOL is a VERY potent cleaning agent.....

First heard it in 2005, tried in 2 different cars and saw no difference. So far every fuel additive I tested showed no gains when tests were long enough and well controlled.

IMHO, the results people post is placebo effect as the #1 variable in MPG is a driver.

Yep - if it worked, wouldn't other people be selling it?

I don't... My questions was is anyone else using it. I don't use additives of any kind...

If I got a bunch for free I would use a little in each tank just to get a few miles out of it.

I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

I've never seen a real test that shows it increase fuel economy, just theorys . Kinda like the run on water hydrogen gas generation [censored] that was ALL OVER the internet a few years back. What happened to all that, lol!

Acetone is a cleaner, and is found in some fuel cleaner products.
And sometimes it DOES seem to have value with MPG.
This varies widely.
I don't see any harm with using small amounts of acetone in the fuel. There are stronger components in there already.

But I have tried it and quit.

I wouldn't try this chemistry without further research.

In too high of a concentration, could it also possibly dissolve into gel-like polymers the plastic 'socks' (filters) on most in-tank fuel pumps??

It started a few years ago when fuel prices went up, now people are trying all kinds of snake oils in their tanks in an attempt to get better mileage.

Mostly its the placebo affect.

You're right, a placebo until the snake oil damages the fuel system.

It's widely been used as a co-solvent in petrol/alcohol blends, and I have used it in fuel over 25 years.

Too high, and I once melted the case of a plastic in-line fuel filter (you know the ones in front of a glass bubble mechanical pump - K16???).

Never really seen any mileage difference, and certainly not that claimed in a lot of on line "literature"

Like I said, acetone is a cleaner for sure, but maybe it helps gas burn, or simply somehow lies to the O2 sensor to lean it out a bit?
