THE PREMISE
The car: 2002 Chevrolet Prizm (1.8L 1ZZ-FE) @ 165,864mi. 4qt oil sump, dipstick range is 3 (low) - 4 (high).

Usage: About 6000mi/year. Car sits unused in an underground garage during the week. Weekends are mostly short trips on local roads (
The setup: Like many 8th gen Corollas, this car burns oil (inadequate piston oil return holes). The current rate in mine is around 1qt every 2000 miles, depending on highway driving and temperature. I've run many, many kinds of oil in it but never paid enough attention to notice which worked better than others. The owner's manual calls for 3000/7500 mile OCIs, but Toyota may have back spec'ed the engines to 5000mi OCIs.

The plan: I'd like to use UOA to see what effect top-off oil has on overall oil condition. I'll add top-off oil, 1/2 qt at a time, every 1000 miles to stay in the upper half of the dipstick range, then change oil when the level hits the 3qt low mark. At ideal loss rates, this means roughly the following OCIs:
  • 4qts = 2000mi
  • 5qts = 4000mi
  • 6qts = 6000mi (etc)
Inspired by dnewton3's fiery invective, I'd also like to do the above using as cheap brand of oil as I can easily find, which for now is $2/qt Ace Hardware oil (on sale in July). 5w-30 or 10w-30 will be used depending on what's available. I'll do a run @ 1qt top-off and if the UOA isn't alarming, move up to 2qts, repeat, etc.

THIS RUN
This is my first UOA. Oil+filter were installed 8/2013. The oil filter was the (1/2" oversize) Purolator Classic L14477. Future changes will all use the ACDelco PF1233 ("the azure thimble") to cut down on variables. Air filter is unknown, but I suspect it is a Purolator Classic. Top-off oil was added at 1600 and 2100 miles, and a few oz were sent for VOA.

This run was shorter than planned, maybe because of cold weather + short trips? The oil sheared to a 20-weight, but that's

I guess. Silicon at 15, but the VOA had 5.7 to begin with. VOA here.

WearCheck comments:
There is no indication of any contamination in the component.
The BN result indicates that there is suitable alkalinity remaining in the oil. The AN level is acceptable for this fluid. The condition of the oil is suitable for further service.
All component wear rates are normal.

Yeah, I'm planning to do 2qts of make-up this next run, we'll see what replacing 50% of the oil looks like. I'm curious if the TAN/TBN and Visc will stabilize w/ the top offs.

Is there anyone here (except GreeCGuy and his van) who only adds, never drains oil? I feel like at some point, something's gonna give.

First, thank you for posting this UOA of "regular" oil. We are awash in top tier full syn UOA's run at 5k.

If I'm reading that right its a 10w30 that sheared well into 20 grade at less than 3k even with a quart of make up? That is abysmal oil performance IMO even though wear looks good.

I'd find a new 2 buck a quart oil to try, like Trop Artic or SuperTech.

Thanks KC! I've never seen Trop Arctic for sale around here. There aren't any Walmarts too close either, I think (one might be opening in DC at some point). I might have to bum a few trips to Costco to investigate their prices instead.

It's not unusual for these engines to shear 30s into 20 weights (Bill in Utah's perfectly running '05 did it in 4000 miles [link]), and this oil started on the light end of 30 weight. Of course you're right, that is with 25% new oil in the sump...

With all the people experimenting with 0w-20 and 5w-20 in this engine w/out problems, I think I'll keep an eye on oxidation and wear to decide when it's gone too far. Unfortunately, the OCI takes me past July when the oil goes on sale, and I sort of want to buy a case

Interesting situation. QSGB is often on sale cheap, might be a viable option for you as well. I certainly understand wanting to keep costs down, 3 of my "fleet" are plenty old and I've got 2 cases of Trop Artic that they'll be running on when the older stash is gone.

Nothing unusual about the sulfur content.

I suspect this is a Warren blended product:
