So i got my filters for my malibu through rockauto for the next few oil changes with some Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20. I noticed there is a big spring like thing in the center tube. What is tht? Also they came wraped in bubble wrap in the box, not in the factory acdelco boxes. How do i store them just keep them n the bubble wrap in the top of the closet till they r needed? I ordered 4 so they should last me about 1-2yrs.

Spring is the bypass valve most likely for sending oil to the engine when it's too thick to flow fast enough through the element. Without a bypass thick oil could cause excessive pressure on the causing it to collapse.

Yes storing them inside a house is best, as long as your closet isn't too humid

Or everytime the pressure differential spec is exceeded the bypass valve starts to open
