For those who say you can lose both, can you provide more info? Seems odd that a service whose business model involves fees for selling things would not provide protection to sellers.

I used to be an eBay powerseller of Acura/Honda transmission fluid. My add specifically stated that the buyer will receive ATF-Z1 fluid, either Honda, or Acura branded, whatever the warehouse has in stock. The fluid is identical, made by the same manufacturer, and the only difference is one bottle says Honda, while one bottle says Acura. So a buyer would PayPal me the money, and the warehouse would ship them a case of ATFZ1 fluid, Acura or Honda branded.

Some DOPE opened up a case that he didn't receive what he ordered. He wanted Honda fluid, but the warehouse shipped him Acura fluid. Even though my add specifically stated that you would recieve either/or, PayPal agreed with him, and refunded him his money. He was not required to return the fluid, and was allowed by PayPal to keep it. So I'm out a case of fluid ($$), the shipping cost ($$), the eBay listing fees ($$), and the PayPal fee ($$).

PayPal is EXTREMELY unfriendly to sellers. There are a ton of scammer that literally make a living on eBay buying goods, opening up claims, and keeping the product for free. These scammers then sell the items themselves and use the proceeds as income.

I've used paypal for at least 15 years now without issue. Maybe I'm just lucky. It is my understanding the buyer can pull money back after paying you for misrepresentation of the merchandise (legitimate or not) through an e-bay purchase. Outside of e-bay they do not have the ability to do this. Is this correct or no?

I recently sold 4 motorcycles on Craigslist. Each time, I got the exact same scammers, with the exact same text, insisting on paying via PayPal.

When the scammers struck, I claimed "No PayPal for me". These scammers insisted on "talking me through the process" and would not take "NO" for an answer.

For the inexperienced, it's easier to spot them when they start up with the hard push.

Craigslist is a great way to sell bikes. But the delete button needs to be quite active as the majority of responses are bogus in some way or another.

I only use paypal to pay for stuff on ebay.
I buy a bunch of gun stuff, I always get a USPS MO, little inconvenient but I won't take chances with paypal.
If I ever sell any of the my stuff, usps mo or cash, maybe a certified check drawn on a local bank.

if the seller insists on one form of payment = scam.

I sold my 90 toyota camry hatch many years back on craigs, the guy came test drove it, paid me in cash.

There is also an "Internets echo chamber of people" that dont understand that there are FRAUDULENT checks everywhere. You can print them on your home computer. I have received three fraudulent "cashiers checks" in the past 10 years. Now how safe is a "cashiers check" when its fake. The bank will even deposit them, and give you the money, for the first 10 days. Then the check bounces, and they rip the money out of your account.

That and Paypal's policy is why I will only take cash for the sale of a car. No money order, no tellers check, only cash. If the person likes the car and wants it he will pay me cash, otherwise there will be another buyer. The last car I sold I had the person meet me at my bank, and I had the bank check the bills and deposit the money into my account.

In God I trust, all others pay cash!

CL is worthless! I haven't had one contact by a perspective buyer, all I get is scammers and sales brokers...what a joke!

You get what you pay for!

cl is fine if you accept that 9 of 10 contacts will be garbage in some form and discard them without wasting time.
i have met plenty of good folks both buying and selling.
since it is free the bar is low and scammers, lowballers, trash are plentiful.
cash only or do the transaction at the bank.
and dont go out of your way to be available at the buyers convenience.
you will waste your time.
i let them know when and where i am available.
my schedule does not accommodate them.its all done on mine.

I wonder if the pay sites (like cycletrader.com) are the same, or better? I would think if people are paying to list on their sites, they'd have more filters for this garbage...

Your real answer is that the price is too high. The market speaks, but not everyone knows how to listen.

I don't think so. I've priced other like models and mine seems to be appropriately priced. Now if I'm still sittin on it at the end of summer, then I'd say my price is too high...

That's the classic response of a typically seller. There's always some seller bias in any pricing. I typically factor that in whenever I sell something. Come up with what I believe is a fair price, then take another 5 or 10% off. Never have an issue selling anything on CL, pretty much sells right away at my asking price. Some people try to low ball me and I just tell them to call me back next week if it's still there, but it's usually gone by then. I also look at other ads, know that the reason half or more are still there are overpriced. The good deals go right away and don't stay listed. Also check sold listings on eBay too. And I don't need every nickel, it's way more work trying to get that last nickel. Answering scammers, tire kickers and keeping it going for weeks on end.

So what if my price is a bit high. It's better to start a bit high than to start too low because you can never raise the price. Besides, I'm in no big hurry to sell. The bike is paid off, it's not costing me anything besides keeping the insurance on it, and I have something to ride until it sells. If it goes too long without any interest, I will lower the price until I get interest...

It's a classic mistake many sellers make. It's all about supply and demand. Once it's posted, people will look at your listing once and if it's too high, they will ignore it. If they see it all the time they won't even notice that you lowered the price. Less demand, lower price. But it's up to you, you're just wasting your time and everyone else's time. If you don't value your time, then continue onward.
